I live in the rural south now.

It was still bad for me growing up in the 2000s once I left to city so I can only imagine how rough it was in the 70s. The farming town I live in is still heavily segregated by race and you have a lot of folks here who would completely disown their own child for dating a black guy.

I know a biracial girl who's mom's side of the family cut her off for dating and eventually marrying outside of her race. She doesn't even know anyone from her mom's side of the family, just her dad's side.(The black side) Just a protip, if you do live in the south, stay close to the city because those backwood towns and rural communites can be some of the most segregated places.
