Michael Jordan's brand is making one big mistake

The greatest of all time may be losing his edge.

Jordan Brand, the biggest name in athletic footwear, has been on a slide recently and it could be weighing on Nike.

During a recent conference call with Jefferies analyst Randy Konik, Josh Luber, the CEO of sneaker resale platform StockX, laid out the issues facing the Jordan Brand and how it could try and combat the problems going forward.

According to Luber, as of January 2015, Jordan Brand made up 96% of the shoe resale market and Adidas was down to around 1%. Nowadays, said Luber, Adidas has 45% market share.

"So, in two and half years, [Adidas] basically went from nonexistent or 1 percent call it, to about 45 percent of the resell market in terms of dollars," Luger said. "And all of that share comes right from Nike and Jordan, because there's nowhere else really for it to come from, and mainly from Jordan Brand."

Luber said that the slipping market share of the Jordan Brand is due to two big issues facing the company:

  1. The shift away from the basketball style: "It's no secret in terms of sort of the fashion trends changing and the fact that over the past couple of years, we've seen skinny jeans and joggers and getting to a place where you don’t necessarily want to wear big, bulky basketball shoes," said Luger. He went on to say that more basic styles like the Adidas Stan Smith and other slim runners have shifted consumers away from the Jordan Brand and towards competitors.
  2. Oversupply of the Jordan Brand: "Three years ago, Retro Jordans were all very limited relative to demand. And so, you had every pair of Jordans that would sell out instantly at retail," Luger said. "Over the past couple of years, Nike and really Jordan, right, has continued to increase supply and increase retail price of Jordans to get to the fact where they're not selling out instantly."
Luber said that the second issue, oversupply, was the one that really mattered. Jordan Brand has maintained a relatively lofty reputation since its introduction due to its limited supply. By eroding this Brand value, the long-term negative for Nike could be substantial.

Additionally, by maintaining a higher reputation this prevents the shoes from being subject to other factors like the style issue.

In the end, the solution, according to Luber, is to rebuild the Jordan mystique by limiting the supply once again. The only problem is that may have other adverse effects on Nike's overall business.

"And it's (double-edged sword) right because I don’t know what it would do to revenues or earnings to start really cutting back on supply of Jordans, and how do you get that elsewhere," Luber said.

"But long term and for the Brand, for protecting the Jordan Brand, that's definitely what I think they should be doing."

i own every damn pair of Js, but it's getting little old. right now all i cop is 1s, 3s, 5s, 11s, and 12s. i really don't give a damn about the rest. and any jordan brand shoes they made recently just don't look good.

Jordan hasn't released any new original product with new design. Releasing the same retros over and over has run its course

Also adidas is more in tune with what's trendy and now when it comes to lifestyle and street fashion/culture. And they have far better endorsers

Jordan is still trying to survive of legacy and name alone but these kids don't know about Jordan like that. They need to be reintroduced to the brand.

Basically adidas is the cooler brand.

Jordan will always have basketball though although I see more people wearing paul George and kyrie signature shoes than Jordan's on the court these days

one word - ADIDAS

yeezys and NMDs are nike's biggest headache
This is the answer. All the casuals and the hypebeasts now only want adidas. Because they are limited and Jordan Brand is oversaturated.
