Michael Wilbon: Black Folks and analytics don't mix

Are you Black? do you "like analytics?"

  • I am Black, African American, etc

  • I am not Black

  • I like & understand analytics

  • I don't have a use for analytics at all

  • I don't understand and don't want to understand analytics

  • I like or use analytics in moderation

  • Analytics is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • The Eye test is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • a mix of analytics and eye test is the best way to determin how good or bad someone or team is

Maybe. Analytics also told Pop to keep the greatest defensive player of his generation on the bench in the last 30 seconds of game 6 against the Heat:dead:
Who would an anti-analytics person have had Duncan guarding on that play when the Heat had to have a 3 and everyone on the floor could shoot one? Where would he be positioned and how would you ensure the long rebound went to him?

Analytics, like anything, should be used with context.

People don't realize that confirmation bias is a problem when it comes to the eye test.

There are people who STILL say that Lebron has no post game, despite the fact that every statistical measure shows that Lebron is pretty damn dominant as a post player.

I know people who think Westbrook is a great finisher at the rim despite all the evidence to the contrary but Westbrook plays ferociously and can throw down monster dunks so his bad misses are forgotten.

Dudes can barely recognize sets, schemes, and point out the options/counters of a single play, and then wanna act like analytics has no place in player/team discussion.

All I know is that analytics got every team launching 3's and it make the games hard to watch.

Also what does not caring about analytics have to do with black people. I'm sure 90% of the population could give a fukk about analytics.

Only good point in the article was the fact that it will be used as a tool to freeze out black coaches and GMs and that wasn't even Wilbon-bons idea.

Always the Kobe stans who hate analytics :pachaha:

My point exactly. Analytics don't support bean, yet he's had a more successful career than just about 4-5 guys in the history of the game.

Just put the ball in the basket, and win rings.

People who support analytics would say something like "Lebrons Better than Kobe because he has a higher per"

But when we say 5>2 rings are suddenly irrelevant :francis:

Just don't use analytics to compare greats.

From my experience this is what I see a lot. People love to pull up stats when they support their claim but when they don't then all of a sudden stats are for geeks/white people and have no credibility

But this relies on the assumption that analytics is actually superior to the eye test. When there has been nothing to prove that.

Its not like analytics has this strong predictive power.

For example all the analytics had Golden State beating OKC easily. Yet we had some people pick OKC based on the eye test.

So far I would say the eye test is beating analytics when it comes to predicting the Golden State vs. OKC series.

I hate when black people throw blacks in general under the bus in the white media.

Literally no other ethnic group pulls this shyt to nearly this extent.
I don't give a fukk who does what. This motherfukka is a traitor and needs to die. The sooner the deader the better.

Analytics have always supported Kobe being one of the best players in the league.

if you're paying an insane amount of money to build a winner do you not want every statistical advantage you can get? Granted, there are several stats that I just can't buy into, but at the end of the day the average baller ain't in the front office. The whole "you don't understand. I played this before" excuse ain't valid if the game passes you by. Look at Phil Jackson, Rick Adelman, Kevin McHale, RIP Flip Saunders but him too. Basketball evolves over time, so to get an edge, you gotta make sense of everything you see and everything your eye may not catch.

you're talking in aspects of professionals and building a team, i'm talking in aspects of black fans talking about the game

What I'm saying is, you can say Bron is better than Kobe.

But don't use analytics as the reason why.

Like, people never cared about analytics in basketball until Lebron stans started using it to rank him in the top 10.

We can temporarily ignore the fact that most people using the eye test were also picking GS to win. If GS comes back, you'll value analytics more?
