Michael Wilbon: Black Folks and analytics don't mix

Are you Black? do you "like analytics?"

  • I am Black, African American, etc

  • I am not Black

  • I like & understand analytics

  • I don't have a use for analytics at all

  • I don't understand and don't want to understand analytics

  • I like or use analytics in moderation

  • Analytics is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • The Eye test is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • a mix of analytics and eye test is the best way to determin how good or bad someone or team is

but when it comes to being able to shop for the ingredients to get those type of teams he succeeded with, he doesn't know what to do.

Well... This is true... GM'ing and coaching are 2 different animals and he was never qualified to be a GM...... and was fortunate to have GMs in Jerry West, and Krause(even though he was hit or miss) while he was coaching

We live in the pace & space era which is all about analytics. We got players on the fastbreak running baseline for that corner 3, it would have never happened in the 90s. If you don't care about it you are behind the curve, whether you are black or white. fukk Michael Wilbon and that c00n article.

Always the Kobe stans who hate analytics :pachaha:
I mean think about it. kobe fans have seen kobe win 5 rings, although people criticized his inefficiency...he still fukkin won. He's won more than a lot of analytic darling teams, so of course Kobe fans aren't gonna value it as much

Yes they do. Whether or not they are putting it down on paper, ballers are absolutely analyzing trends, tendencies, and probabilities when playing.

i think players know their hot spots and where they shoot best. but it doesn't take analytics to know that. 8 years old me knew that i liked shooting from the elbow :heh:
i mean if knowing trends and tendencies when playing is analytics than everything that happens on the court is technically analytics. you playing a guy who can only go right and you notice after 3 possessions is that analytics in the sense that most people consider?

What I'm saying is, you can say Bron is better than Kobe.

But don't use analytics as the reason why.

Like, people never cared about analytics in basketball until Lebron stans started using it to rank him in the top 10.
Analytics has grown with our ability to measure different things. Ironically, LeBron would be rated higher if he played before the analytics age because idiots didn't have such a voice back then.

We can temporarily ignore the fact that most people using the eye test were also picking GS to win. If GS comes back, you'll value analytics more?

No. Because there are a billion factors that affect the game. There could be injuries, suspension, guys could get into foul trouble in a close game, etc.

This is why analytics is stupid. There is too much going on in a basketball game to think it can be reduced to a few numbers.

Analytics is for people to lazy to watch the games.

Because if you watch teams like Golden State and OKC play consistently, you'll have no use for analytics.

It's not a black or white thing...

However, old nikkas on here don't use analytics and are forever exposing themselves with shytty opinions because they go off pre-conceived notions and the eye test. Just look at Art Barr's thread on Channing Frye.

Analytics have made the NBA better and added dimensions to the game that didn't exist then.

If you are accurate and unbiased in recalling events, analytics just confirms what you already knew. Bias and pride can be big obstacles for people.

My Pops Forever RIP
you're talking in aspects of professionals and building a team, i'm talking in aspects of black fans talking about the game

I don't know many fans who conversationally just bring up advanced numbers outside of maybe PER. Those numbers aren't as easy to digest when talking about players. Blogs do a better job of doing that because they have the space and content to do so.

Analytics have always supported Kobe being one of the best players in the league.

So? It's still bullshyt.

You guys think us Kobe fans like him because of his stats or championships.

We like him because he's fun to watch. PERIOD. He's the most entertaining player I've ever seen and that's why I root for him.

The other stuff is superfluous. It's moments like the final 3 minutes of his 60 point farewell game where he went off that make us his fans.

for the second time in this thread, people who eschew anything beyond the eye test have shyt backwards. people who dig deeper, and look for anything beyond what they see with their own eyes arent the lazy ones. the ones ignoring everything besides what they tell themselves to see are the lazy ones

Kobe's success winning titles vis-a-vis LeBron should pretty much prove analytics FALSE.

analytics aren't the end be all though, for example...Cavs have taken 30 more 3pa in the last 2 games than the Raptors, yet they have lost. analytics don't consider intangibles things such as will, basketball iq, grit etc..

I know why people like him. And I know why stans try to argue he is the best because he's their favorite and not because any actual measures support it.

i never run into people in person that really talk about advanced stats.. the stats are cool for people who wanna look into them. but i don't mess with them and i don't feel like i'm missing out on much. that's as a regular fan.

if someone is trying to get into coaching/managing/etc, then yeah it's probably a good idea to get familiar with advanced stats whether you believe in them or not. i don't really see the problem :manny:
