Michael Wilbon: Black Folks and analytics don't mix

Are you Black? do you "like analytics?"

  • I am Black, African American, etc

  • I am not Black

  • I like & understand analytics

  • I don't have a use for analytics at all

  • I don't understand and don't want to understand analytics

  • I like or use analytics in moderation

  • Analytics is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • The Eye test is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • a mix of analytics and eye test is the best way to determin how good or bad someone or team is

Putting value on players is VERY important if I have to decide whether it would be foolish or not to dish out 8-9 figure salaries.

That rarely if ever happens even during those types of debates. They supplement your argument, but not to where it's a deal breaker. With context, you can find out why that number is what it is. Stats like that further discussion, not determine it.

To me analytics is superfluous. If you watch your team play consistently, it's easy to value players accordingly.

I didn't need analytics to tell me Carlos Boozer was dreadful. Or that we needed to resign Ed Davis on the Lakers last year.

Once again analytics is for the lazy. Those that don't watch the games.

If you watch the games you know what each players strengths and weaknesses are.

Kobe's success winning titles vis-a-vis LeBron should pretty much prove analytics FALSE.

Kobestans always have to come in and spew the most idiotic diarrhea out of their mouth.

Kobe played 7 years with prime Shaq, and Lebron didn't, therefore analytics is wrong? :mjlol:

The eye test and every other non-analytics measure says that Jerry West was better than John Havlicek.

Yet Havlicek was 8-0 in Finals, and West was 1-9.

So does 8 titles to 1 prove the eye test false?

No, of course not, everyone still knows that West was better than Havlicek, because basketball fans in general weren't mindless idiots quoting "ringz!" and nothing else until the LA crack epidemic bore all of you and your homies.

If I only went off the eye test I'd say "but Boozer gettin you 20/10. Keep him out there"

Neither end is the be all end all.

the fact that he thinks stuff like eFG% and WHIP are some crazy advanced stats that are beyond comprehension for a portion of sports fans is laughable, especially from someone who write about sports
I was just reading this article. He made it seem like black= not smart enough for analytics.

Black folks and analyticis, don't mix is one of the most racist headlines I've seen this year, but it will get a fukking pass because a c00n like Wilbon posted.

Mission Impossible: African-Americans & analytics

It’s like calculating points per 100 possessions, a very popular go-to stat in NBA circles. Why is that more important than points per 48 minutes, which is the actual time in which an NBA game is played?

i mean, what in the fukk? this guy cant even grasp why points per possession is a better metric than points per game? how do you cover games for decades and be so fukking clueless. shyt like that, and whip etc are as basic as it gets and this guy thinks its over the heads of an entire race of sports fans

Having this type of convo on here is pointless because coli posters just want any and every reason to call another black person a c00n if they disagree with them

Mike is saying that black people simply to don't talk about sports using advanced analytics in every day talk like when you are in your group text or at a kick back function or in the office

He's only speaking on the black experience, that's what the article is about

He is right. Who cares if the nerds on find analytics useful.
