Michael Wilbon: Black Folks and analytics don't mix

Are you Black? do you "like analytics?"

  • I am Black, African American, etc

  • I am not Black

  • I like & understand analytics

  • I don't have a use for analytics at all

  • I don't understand and don't want to understand analytics

  • I like or use analytics in moderation

  • Analytics is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • The Eye test is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • a mix of analytics and eye test is the best way to determin how good or bad someone or team is

analytics is used to keep cacs in the head coach/management side of basketball

In baseball it means a lot but in basketball that shyt is minimal and over fukking rated

I'm sayin'.

In my opinion, stats don't mean shyt in basketball or football because the sample size is always too small. 16 games ain't shyt. 82 games ain't shyt. Playing 45-48 minutes per game ain't shyt.

And there's not that many variables/factors in these sports to make any of these ratios worthwhile.

This article in which he attempts to generalize black americans as ignorant or incapable of grasping analytics.
His previous article where he tried to claim Sean Taylor deserved to die because he was troubled and most likely had it coming. Even though Sean Taylor had no history of criminal behavior, crew up in a stable family, not on the street, and etc.

His body of work is nothing more than a c00n used to spread white liberal agenda in talking down about blacks.
He didn't generalize black people as either of those things

He said black people don't care about analytics when it comes to discussing sports

The disconnect is that everyone values and uses analytics. The only difference is some people prefer to do it in their head and some people prefer to use the hard numbers.

This is the root of what superstition comes from. We try to find correlations between inputs and outputs. Sometimes they are entirely false and the more we value perception over reality, the more we find ourselves doing things that don't actually work.

Look how often we kill the coach who runs up the middle every time on 3rd and 1, or punts every time from 4th and inches from midfield. The successful coaches go away from the conventional wisdom because they know from analytics what actually works.

When people say "I hate analytics" they are really saying "The unbiased data doesn't support my hunches and gut feelings so I reject it" Ironically, they are using analytics to come to that conclusion.
It's this kind of arrogant bytchmade attitude that a lot of geeks who live/die by analytics have that turns people off. I don't think that anyone hates analytics. People hate feminine attitudes like yours when it comes to analytics. Here we have a story that includes NBA players themselves explaining why they don't live/die by analytics and why that can be problematic, yet that doesn't stop you from running in here being all bytchmade and dismissive.

Saying black people don't care about analytics is a generalization kid.
You do understand that right?

Also you can look at any in depth discussion on this very board and see it isn't true, we use stats on here and other boards in discussions about sports. I know for a fact in football and basketball, it just isn't the be all end all but it is always brought up.

except they do? and miss me with the "people might talk about it on message boards but you dont hear it in every day discussions" i hear discussions in sports books all the time that reference shyt that wilbon would consider advanced stats, since he thinks stuff like points per possession and whip are extra advanced

This board is a niche way to discuss sports in no way is it a fair representation of how people talk sports

The article is about about black people and analytics on a site that discuss race in sports

So, no it's not a generalization when that was the confines of the article

No one is discussing Raps vs Cavs and talking about how many points per possession the Raptors are scoring when Kyrie is on the court vs Off

It's also an incredibly lame way to talk in real life and more over it doesn't make the entertainment valet better

its not always referenced as "points per possession" its as simple a concept as someone discussing a team scoring more points per game because they play at a quicker pace. its literally as simple as that. thats "advanced discussion" according to wilbon for an entire race of people when talking sports

(The funny thing is when these idiots like Barkely say they hate stats but still base their analysis on stats. They just don't use the more advanced (more accurate) stats but the simpler (less accurate)stat. Like Barkley always talks about rebounds and turnovers and points. There are much more accurate numbers to reflect scoring, rebounding but Barkley and most other anti-analytics people just don't understand how to use them so they shun them.
Now if you ignored numbers completely and used just the eye test it'd be different. But everyone uses numbers. The anti--analytics people are mostly those that just use the simplistic less useful ones.
It doesn't have anything to do with race
