Michael Wilbon: Black Folks and analytics don't mix

Are you Black? do you "like analytics?"

  • I am Black, African American, etc

  • I am not Black

  • I like & understand analytics

  • I don't have a use for analytics at all

  • I don't understand and don't want to understand analytics

  • I like or use analytics in moderation

  • Analytics is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • The Eye test is the best way to measure how good or bad someone or team is in sports

  • a mix of analytics and eye test is the best way to determin how good or bad someone or team is

I'm black and anyone who has read my analyses on QBs knows that I use Numberfire's NEP, Rotoviz,Adjusted yards per attempt, breakout college age and other advanced statistical tools in my football analysis. Wilbon is a ridiculous c00n.
I read those sites too. Link to your analysis bro?

Gang violence...
even in baseball people are exaggerating how dominant your choices are based on the numbers

and anyway, most segregated neighborhoods have minority coaching at the academic level. that's how it was where i grew up. all coaching staff and stat crunchers were black or mexican, so this "black dudes play the game and white dudes coached" thing is nonsense. in a vacuum, blacks fill all positions, but at higher levels whites are given certain opportunities that blacks get less often. it's just like how people didnt know there were black kids playing QB in the hood who got diverted to WR and RB in college.

So you need to analyze the stats before you can asses Kevin Love as a defender?
Well I'd probably look at the numbers before making a strong claim about his defense, but I've thought the negativity about his defense has been exaggerated because there are a few clips of him sucking. If used properly he's fine, he isn't a rim protector and he isn't going to stop a dynamic wing scorer but I think he's versatile enough to guard positions 3-5 in most cases without being a detriment.

This is a White Supremacist Association giving an Afrikan a mic to say that Afrikans are stupid and Europeans are geniuses.

How do you use someone properly on defense? I don't even know what that means. Defense is about guarding the opposing team from scoring. Kevin Love clearly struggles keeping people in front and protecting the paint. Stats don't differentiate between guys just missing makeable shots and someone really playing good defense causing bad shots. You why watching the game will always be more reliable/accurate than just analyzing stats. I'm quite sure that he and Kyrie's defensive stats looked great after the first two games but that doesn't necessarily mean that they were playing good defense. After watching him play for years you shouldn't need to analyze a bunch of stats to tell you that he's not a good defender.

blacks being underrepresented in math/science has more to do with these analytics guys being predominantly white... the underlying reason for that is way bigger than basketball and falls into structural inequality/racism. to use an argument of blacks being inherently more emotional as an explanation is just unforgivably stupid

idiots like wilbon can only contextualize within the simple-world view of what they know. this article is low-key insulting... had a white person written it, everyone would be coming at their neck.

I'm surprised because with sites such as Draft Kings, Fan Duel, etc, you have so many people just trying to use analytics to build their own fantasy team.

This is what I was waiting for.

Analytics was cultivated and amplified because of gambling, mainly because of rotisserie baseball.

They have their place and their virtues but if you're trusting them while making your decisions as a team/fan, you're gambling.
They are the cherry on the sundae.

I'm all for analytis, especially SportsUV data, but I've always hated those catch all stats like PER and WS that are treated like gospel for many.

I like looking at ts%, usg%, pretty much any % because they give me a better insight into a player's production than raw numbers, I rarely go further than that though.

Wilbon is simply reiterating that 'black people got soul' in long form. There is some truth to it. Gets more people involved in sports.
WallStreet analyses damn near everything why not eat off of sports too. Bernie Sanders needs to rail about this...math is the devil!:sadcam:

They are a useful tool but kinda overrated imo.

I just prefer to watch the game and use the eye test. all those numbers wouldn't have told you Westbrook was going to play like this but if you watched how he changed in the Spurs series you'd have a 'hunch' :yeshrug:

You think you can assess defense but you don't know what it means for a player to be used properly? :what: I just said he's not a rim protector and he's not a guy that can guard quick perimeter players. But if you're expecting him to do either, thats on you.

For most 4s and 5s, he does fine because he has enough size and can stay in front and there aren't many big men that are inside scoring threats. Furthermore, his 3 point range causes problems for whichever PF or C that has to check him.
