I think it was crazy last gen when Xbox was outselling PS3 in the U.S. or around the world three or four to one but sell only 5 units in Japan in a month and I think it's still crazy now how the in world or US PS is now outselling the Xbox but the bigger story is maybe 10 units get moved in Japan in 3 months

you don't catchup and surpass if that's the case. Essentially the advantage the Xbox 360 had in the US was offset by the Japanese sales and they caught up with mainland Europe and the rest of the world. Final ratio of 360s to PS3s in the states was 1.67 to 1 (5:3).
