MojoKid writes "Microsoft has been loudly and insistently banging a drum: All support and service for Windows XP and Office 2003 shuts down on April 8. In early February, faced with a slight uptick in users on the decrepit operating system the month before, Microsoft hit on an idea: Why not recruit tech-savvy friends and family to tell old holdouts to get off XP? The response ... was a torrent of abuse from Windows 8 users who aren't exactly thrilled with the operating system. Microsoft has come under serious fire for some significant missteps in this process, including a total lack of actual upgrade options. What Microsoft calls an upgrade involves completely wiping the PC and reinstalling a fresh OS copy on it — or ideally, buying a new device. Microsoft has misjudged how strong its relationship is with consumers and failed to acknowledge its own shortcomings. Not providing an upgrade utility is one example — but so is the general lack of attractive upgrade prices or even the most basic understanding of why users haven't upgraded. Microsoft's right to kill XP is unquestioned, but the company appears to have no insight into why its customers continue to use the OS. "

I really hope that part is either a lie or an exaggeration.

Don't understand the hate for windows 8.

It took a minute to get used to it, but now I wouldn't go back to xp.
Win 8 is great. With an add-on like start8 or classic shell it's actually better than windows 7. However windows 8 in its current state is utter fukking garbage in the desktop space, and it's complete arrogance in Microsoft's part not to bring back the start menu. They deserve every bit of flack they get for their incompetence and stubbornness.

Can't say much but there are real world consequences to continuing to use and run WinXP past the support date. This is true for both Home and Business users. People can refuse to upgrade from WinXP as much as they want but, that's not going to fix any remaining security holes and deficiencies that it has.

If need be switch that box to CentOS (or Ubuntu) and see if there is alternative supported software within Linux.

Why do people expect a product to do exactly what they want or they are angry?

Microsoft decided it was time to evolve their product, if you don't like it, don't buy it. Or get an add on that fulfills your needs. That's the beauty of an open platform.

switched to ubuntu and haven't booted back into windows8 in like 6 months :ahh:
honestly, if you aren't a gamer there is no reason to not make the switch... ubuntu is faster, looks better, and is much much safer... and it's free.
