The character of Christain is an archetype of every "bad movie boyfriend", esp. in horror movies, whether that was intentional or not, I can't say, but that was my read.

In the beginning, he represents the typical marginally attached and halfway present boyfriend, who is mostly selfish and self centered, but retains the facade of a "nice guy" and "good guy", even his friends characterize his behavior as absurd, only they have the opinion he cares too much for Dani, while the audience sees no evidence of this at all. Those segments play on modern relationships mores and tropes, pretty effectively.

His lines, intentional or not, often characterize him as the typical American opportunist and self centered individual, who lazily steals his friends idea, and later entirely abandons him to further his ambitions, (that the friend is black is never referenced, making it ambiguous whether that was the directors intent) I laughed out loud at a few of those lines, I thought the satire was clear.

His attempts to comfort Dani, is shallow and laughable, after witnessing a man being split apart with a massive hammer in a gruesome ritual, he says, with all the gravitas he can muster: "Are you uhhh okay"? "Take some time for yourself", his attempts were some of the movies funniest lines. When things get a little hectic, he is the character saying "Lets split up", he's the dummy, the pawn, the man used for his bland good looks and semen, and disposed of, for the intellectually and character lacking person he has shown himself to be.

*I posted back in July, in regard to the Christian character. I think I am accurate in what the director was conveying, and I think the whole conversation is interesting.

he was dead b/c you know from minute 20 that every character except the main girl were gonna die. there was never any doubt. i just don't think it was satisfying in any way. "Yeah, burn you fukk! you decided to do the same thesis as your friend!" i think that was ultimately this film maker's intent, and i'm sure he has some pretentious convoluted explanation for it, but i just don't care enough b/c this genre of movie can eat a dikk.

... until the next one that my dumb ass watches based off the hype.
Why are you glazing over the fact the smashed that juvenile and got caught........
She could have burned up one of them villagers but opted for him because he broke a horror movie sin.
You don't cheat on your girl or act like a creep or u'll die.

It could have been a mature film about couples having problems but by horror movie standards the lack of empathy for his girl and the thesis put him in the cross hairs and the infidelity is what got him killed.

I probably would've fell asleep if the director wasnt imaginative with his shots.

Almost all the characters lacked a sense of self preservation. The non white couple did which is why they got kilt quick. This entire situation couldve been avoided if the dude dumped her ass months before like he was gonna. He went into simp mode after her family died like shyt changed:mjtf:

Question to those who have seen it:
What actually happened to Josh (the dude that pissed on the ancestral tree)? I know we saw him again when Chidi gets killed and he looks fukked up, but what happened there? It almost looks like it was someone dressed in his SKIN, not him. And then when they burn him, his body looks so emaciated and floppy, like a puppet. Did they literally gut that dude?

Lol.

They told him she was ready to be smashed and he was with it. He wanted to participate in the ritual.

They gave him some love juice so he could hulk smash and when she gave him the signal to follow her, his bytch ass got up and left to go fukk.

Whatever tweaking he was doing at the table didn't stop him from smashing.

If you want to be technical he was drugged. They gave him some strong ass Viagra. Not drugged where you pass out and wake up like what happened. Drugged like it's smash time.. he was acting shook tweaking at the table till ol girl said it's time...suddenly he was ready for action . He had the jitters about what he was about to do

And he burned up for it

I think this is a fair assessment of his character, but his punishment was still disproportionate for being a "bad boyfriend". It wasn't like a morality play where the villain gets their just dessert. Or maybe Ari is trying to say that in this village it doesn't even matter. It is interesting that Christian gets killed alongside those two other tourists who literally did nothing, and his friends who committed varying degrees of transgressions against the village. It's like none of it matters.

I always felt like it was very rapey. He was drugged. I don't think he would have went in there if he hadn't been.

Rapey?

Yea, statutory.

He was told she was interested in sex and was trying to cast spells, putting pubic hair in his food. He was interested in doing the ritual. When he got the gesture he was with it. Post nut clarity, realizing she was tryna get pregnant and he was surrounded by a bunch of naked decrepit thots he was ready to be out.

Drugged lol. Drugged with complete control over his faculties and aware of his conscience. That was a lil Molly cut with Viagra. He was not a victim, by horror movie rules he was dead and by society standards he was a pervert who someone's father would kill.

Yeah maybe he wouldn't have gone through it if he wasn't drugged because his girl was right there. It wasn't like they were trying to make it a secret.

Finally saw this last night....damn.

Not beating Hereditary but definitely worth a watch. That said...I'm kinda glad I waited on it.

This might get better with repeated watches.

I don't think we're supposed to root for anyone. It's what makes the ending so messed up. You're not even supposed to think the village is evil. People are just being people, shaped by their environment and selfish desires. In many ways, the story is amoral. It has no opinion on who is right. It feels like people are trying to force a narrative that wasn't there.
Definitely not. Even the breh fukked up :francis:

Be interesting if they tied hereditary and this together by having the festival be part of a ritual to choose a queen for the demon that was conjured in hereditary.

I'd be down for that.

This movie had some gorgeous shots. The Irreversible-style rotating shot when they first drive to the ritual was :wow:

I think I’m gonna give this a rewatch once the directors cut drops and see how I feel about it then. My boy just finished it yesterday and had all types of :dahell: reactions to it :mjlol:
