I came in here to ask that. Why do you all think the director wanted you to feel like he deserved what happened to him? Nothing in the film suggests this. This is a ritual that this group of people do every some odd years. He was a victim of this ritualistic practice. Has nothing to do with him being a bad person. Maybe I need to see it again but I didn't get any of that in my theater viewing

The director himself has said it many times:

Inside the Craziest Movie Sex Scene of the Year

The visceral jumble of conflicted reactions a viewer might have to the scene is the goal. “It’s designed to be funny and uncomfortable and beautiful and strange,” he says. The rest of the film’s third act is meant to elicit “catharsis,” but not in a way that lets audiences off the hook. “The guy that you have been conditioned to not like is going to be humiliated for about 40 minutes and totally just destroyed. He is totally undressed, rendered completely vulnerable, used by these women for their own purposes. He’s exploited by them completely.”

but what's the point then? usually when a character dies it's either super sympathetic or you're rooting for it b/c they're a piece of shyt. this dude was just kind of a bytch. that type of character didn't really deserve anything at all from the story. is the point "well, life sucks, shyt happens, it's a horror, anyone can die?" i just feel like he could have had a couple scenes where he treated her like shyt or something. you didn't care when they typical "bro" friend died. black dude technically broke a rule, but even he didn't really have a strong enough arc to die... whatever, i don't even care anymore. this movie isn't gonna stick with me

None of the characters deserved to die.
You can tell the director made us criticize the characters and with that we justify their demise. The movie tricks us to believe that the cult isn't evil and Peele wasn't the REAL bad guy of the whole movie, but Christian is.

Did Josh trespass and took pictures of the book, which he was told not to? Yes.
But if he got away with it, its possible he can investigate what the cult is about and expose them. So no, he shouldn't had died.

Was Mark disrespectful to pee on the sacred log? Yes.
Did he deserve to die? Again, he didn't know, he was ignorant. Even I was like "Why didn't he just go in the woods?", but he didn't know.

Christian was an a$$hole. A bytch made boyfriend and a bytch made friend to Josh. Even though he was trying to copy Josh's work and claim it was his idea, its implied he's just doing it because its convenient and he just want a passing mark. He deserved to fail his project.
Christian should just have the balls to break up with Dani way before her family died. He hated looking after her all the time, but he still put up. Even though his heart wasn't really in it to make her happy, he put in somewhat effort. The relationship from both Dani and Chris was co-dependent, that's a terrible relationship for anybody because both people are too fed up to be with each other but dont want to be alone from another. Does Christian deserved to be killed? No.

Peele was the real enemy. In the very first scene, we see a portrait of the whole movie. It Foreshadows what happens. Peele is the guy that is supposed to look for outsiders to recruit and sacrifice. That what cults do.

I keep fukking think of this movie, damn

Yeah see thats the thing i didnt feel like the guy deserved any of that shyt. He didnt even want to be with the woman any more but just kept the relationship going because of what she went through. They kept him drugged up the entire movie and put a hex on him to fukk that girl, the girl wasnt even attractive! I wanted them to get rid of the white girl, she was a burden.

Fire post. I gotta revisit the conversation about death during the first sacrifice scene with the old folks. I'm curious to try and revisit everything with the cult's perspective specifically in mind just to draw out more thoughts and directions to analyze this ish.

They try to rationalize their practice like its normal as brushing your teeth. Death is part of life's journey but how the two elders off themselves is too extreme and their minds weren't in the right place, the exact same way Dani felt when they killed Christian. I feel like I'm saying too much, just watch the movie again. I'll watch it again for the 4th time. :francis:

:dahell: : The Movie

Literally the most uncomfortable I’ve ever been watching a movie, even from the very beginning when she was crying

Maybe not literally but it’s up there

Just finished watching this from Redbox.

I knew it was from the director of Hereditary (which I enjoyed more), so I expected some disturbing shyt. I agree the cinematography was beautiful, with the bright daylight of the Swedish countryside.

Good reminder not to mess with drugs or visit remote villages :hubie:

Did not expect the ending to play out like it did.

I guess that's what happens when the relationship becomes too unbearable to stay in :lolbron:
