50 was basically the last of the "superstar gangsta" type of rappers, after him, it was all about trap music or sum soft shyt..there was no flag bearer for hardcore/gangsta rap after 50.




the last NEW street artist that sold a lot & had the streets behind him besides 50 was jeezy, and for him that started in 05, ever since then, the streets haven't been a factor sales wise..plus all the rappers who the streets listen to fukked wit kanye, so how wasn't he the "in thing" in hiphop?



how can you say it was no transition when there's clearly a difference between the rap scene from the early 2000's up to today?

Co sign. When Kanye defeated Fif in that sales battle, I knew that the rap game that I grew up on would be forever changed. Fif was the last of the boom bap street rapper that has commercial success. 07 also marked the end of the Dips, which made NY completely irrelevant in the mainstream. It was the worst year in Hip Hop due to that and the absurd amount of one hit wonders. 2005 was when Jeezy, Boosie, and them Texas rappers blew up and put NY on the backseat.

I think Mike's definitely got a point, and it's very true for the most part. People will usually try to emulate what they see, know and like. With that being said, most of the cats that were legitimately about that life weren't that commercially successful.

Pretty much as real as it gets. But the internets and everything like that have allowed for pretty much anyone, anywhere to make an album and put it out there. So going back to what's popular, I think there's a lot more now because that's the now.

Yeah. Although the music isn't as good as it is back then, you expect rappers to be grimey when cities are cleaning up and have lower crime rates? Problem is, that gangsta rap pigeonholed itself and gotten far too predictable in the early 00s, which soon led to its demise of its popularity. Only so much hood/ violent shyt you can spit to until the public gets numb of its impact. Guess that had to be sacrificed to let black folk improve themselves mentally.
