American conservatives spent 40 years (starting with the Powell memorandum, ending with Citizens United) turning money into free speech, and corporations into people, in order to legally buy out elections/the pocketbooks of American politicians.
Seems pretty simple, if we put a cap on campaign finances (at say $100,000 per campaign), then the politicians won't be forced to beg mega-corporations and super-lobbies for the kind of money it takes to run a campaign. Because the mega-corporations are all making serious money off of fear mongering, and the sale of high-powered rifles, it's impossible to get any real change, because the people we're asking to change the legislation only have their jobs because of the people we're asking them to legislate against.
