Just like with most statistics, its just raw numbers and you have to actually look a little deeper into it past the surface.

People who drink / abuse drugs heavily tend to be loose with sex, heroin abusers sharing needles, fags and trannies, promiscuous people who fukk any and everything, etc... are all prone to much higher std rates and are lumped in with "normal" people who have regular sex lives. Basically its your body, be smart and choose quality people. Sometimes a situation calls for using a condom, sometimes a situation doesn't but if a person isn't intelligent or experienced enough to determine that then they probably should be wearing one all the time.
