Could you guys live in an RV for an entire year? Or even better a van? What about quitting your job that pays 70k per year to work at a grocery store? Could you do it all in the name happiness?
Are you willing to renounce this materialistic society and live under the radar?

I have 50k in student debt, a car note, a relatively well paying job that I am not too passionate about. Overall, when I look at my lifestyle and the decisons I made I just see waste and excess. Mind you, this is coming from someone who is far less materialistic than most.

To be honest if I was single I would probaby save up enough to buy an RV or large van and live in there until my student debt is payed off. Then I would quit my well paying job and work at Wholefoods or some grocery store while focused on my true passions in life.

I had an epiphany this past month that most of modern society is all built upon an illusion. We live 75% of our lives disillusioned into believing that material wealth is the pinnacle of all success. We spend most of our waking life in a job we hate interacting with people we dont like. This is tragic. I came to the conclusion that we ultimately do not know anything and our entire sense of self is built upon lies. But enough of me philosophizing -

Check out these videos of people who've come to similar conclusions

On a side note you'll see that the majority of these videos feature whites. However, I feel the minimalist lifestyle can greatly enhance the happiness of many blacks. Our culture tends to be overly materialistic and I think much of it is due to being historically oppressed. When you are made to feel less than, you will over compensate with "things". This has happened to us on collective level. Could minimaliam be key to our liberation? food for thought

op calculate and post how long it would take you to pay off 50k if you live in an rv, like month by month expenses.

Lost my first house back in winter 2007. As a result, husband and I sold 90% of all we owned and then left the USA for 3 years and lived in 2 developing countries. We just took our clothes, some CDs and a PS2 with some games.

That was the absolute happiest, simplest time of my life. Paid basic bills, had no car, couldn't speak the language too well but we had each other. Ate simple ass meals and had fun by just observing life around us. Made me waaay more appreciative of simple living.

Been back for 7 years and it seems we've got more material shyt than before (sigh), but we have kids now, too, so maybe that's OK. Honestly, I wouldn't mind a minimalist lifestyle. Traveling out of an RV for a year and roadschooling my kids sounds really fulfilling to me:yeshrug:

I spend about 1000 for rent each month. Lets say I paid off car note and I was able to save from not paying rent. Here's what the breakdown would be

Current take home pay. Net Wages 1600

Food 200
Internet ( no cable) - ~ 50
Gas / Maintenance for RV or large van ~ 400
Cell phone - 70
Misc. ( membership fees, entertainment, haircuts etc) - 150
Savings - 300

That leaves me with close to 2000 left. I could get it paid with 2 years

What were the names of the two developing countries? Most people don't move to other countries when they hit hard times in this country. Did you guys have any ties to those countries?

a lot of the white folks can do it, because they come from money

a nikka come from the bottom and damn sure don't want to go back

You make a valid point. I was scratching my head wondering where ol girl got the 10,000 to spend on a vann. Most people in this country, blacks especially do not have 10,000 on hand to spend on an RV for large van. That isn't to say that minimalism isn't for blacks. The lifestyle doesn't have a preference for certain skin complexions.

If I was single, I would be that way. When you feel responsible for other people, you’re less likely to feel the need to be a minimalist unless everyone is on board. I was actually moving toward that way of life a few years ago but these last few years haven’t been minimalist like

Appreciate for tagging me.

I'm currently sleeping on cardboard boxes with some covers on the strip and its cold as fukk but I'm loving it.

I could be living like a millionaire but I chose the spiritual path and became enlightened and have never looked back. This is my 2nd time homeless but this time by choice. The first time before I swore I never be homeless but I said I had enough of this world and wanted to return back home to God so I took the spiritual path serious, so I did yoga, meditation everyday and lived the celibate life, so I can develop my chakras and I noticed a change in my consciousness in a month and it kept expanding. But I was living with some friends because I was working left the street life behind and always swore I never end up homeless or live like that, but God works in mysterious ways and 3 months into my spiritual path I ended up homeless on orange blossom trail (@Demetrius ) knows these parts. I still worked my job but I said imma get back in the streets and use my pimp wisdom to get back on my feet and I ended catching a woman who was married to a rich ass white man, she was out there just having fun selling p*ssy than going home but I caught her and she took me into the rich life but I also came across another millionaire who would come to trail and he looked homeless and he would smoke crack and one day he invited me come on bus with him and he took me to his million dollar neighborhood. I ended up staying there with him and his wife. So I really became into the lavish life but I already was on spiritual path so within me I developed a detachment to this life and I wanted what money couldn't give me which is freedom from this world and only enlightenment can you give you that, and I seen how rich people still suffer and how money can confine you, so I dipped and moved out of state so I can become enlightened. The rich woman tracked my ass down and stalked me and still does to this day and rich man keeps in contact with me.

But while I was homeless the first time I felt a freedom I never felt before, every day was a new day for adventure. People on this site always complain about how to meet people and stuff but I don't have that problem homeless because being homeless you can end up anywhere, one day I can wake up on Obt and that night be in miami because some people's invited me on a road trip. Washing up in public bathrooms what I had to do.

When being homeless you learn take life as it comes at you because literally every day is a new day. I came across a lot of smart homeless people who came down on bad luck, I met nurses who became prostitutes because they lost their families, I've met former lawyers and doctors who said living that rich life meant nothing so they live on the streets. People stereotype thinking homeless people are junkies and stuff far from the truth, sure you have addicts but they still people and should be treated as such. It's like in the wire peole hate junkies like bubbles in real life but loved him on the wire because you seen his story in your face and it causes you to be open minded and accept that person.

When you're homeless you live in the present, past and future don't cross your mind and to an enlightened person that's how you're suppose to actually live in the eternal present because past and future are projections of the mind and there is a Lao Tzu quote of the past and future that explains it. So because I live in the present every day counts.

Also, you're not confined by bills, work, etc. You know how most people are concerned of never losing their possessions that never crosses your mind because you have nothing to lose literally so you live free. Only thing to lose is your life and that's if you cherish it. There is bad part of being homeless sometimes you can go hungry, might get into fights and stuff depending on if you causing trouble but if you stay out of trouble way you good.

This my 2nd time being homeless but by choice I work for tips just enough to sustain and I preach knowledge and wisdom and I love it but being homeless is not for the weak which might sound crazy, but not many are built to survive so i wouldn't tell someone to live that life unless they can really handle it.

You want to live in a rv I wouldn't consider that honless you still have somewhere that has a roof to lay, just not confined by a house but living in a rv and traveling can be a beautiful thing to. It allows you to see and travel the world and not be boxed in, so if your heart desires or its in God will for you to do it then do it. Don't let money, materialism, etc confine you but first give up attachment to these things to make it work.

And this whole world is an illusion, its all in your head. This world is like a dream when you wake up you realize its all in your head. If people really knew they was chasing after illusions they give the world up to.
