yes they were but i only recall one season this happened which is '03
some billionaire tried to offer each team a lot of money to play an unofficial game but the ncaa shut that down quickly.

Microsoft even offered the NCAA 30 mil to do it after the 03 season
All the hype leading into the 07 season was about USC vs LSU
i missed this post but mimicked it just above. I was so mad when that unofficial championship game never happened. and i'm not a fan of either school, it was just the idea of them being the 2 best teams.
