The problem nowadays is that the mid-range game has been de-empahsized by coaching and analytics. Analytics tells us the mid-range shot is bad. You either shoot from the paint or you shoot a three to maximize efficiency. According to analytics today, MJ's game is "bad" because it involves too many shots from 10-15 ft.

Wow....Now THAT'S skills.

Too many stat sheet geeks out there nowadays.

Just looking at the stats, you'd think Russel Westbrook was more skilled than MJ.

Look at the footwork, the balance, the crisp execution....That's true mastery of the game right there:mjcry:

2:14....@Tyronn Lue....we needed you in the shot right there:whew:

Yup. Man that fadeaway, you can tell mj made sure he didn't show a preference either side. He'll shoot goin left or fight, fade back or forward. Add that he can drive left or right, u just can't guard him. Too many options.

Westbrook is just relying on athleticism. If he doesn't develop as a player hell suffer as he gets older.

Such a shame. Obviously mj made it look flawless you'd think these great players would understand how powerful it is especially if you can drive it too.

I think Russ would benefit learning a thing or two from GP on the offensive end as well.

I know this is about his mid-range game but one of the most overlooked aspect of his post up moves is the up and under - when you mix up the fadeaways on either sides with up and unders, you're unguardable.

btw, I know some people knock his less than stellar 3 point %s, but judging from his legendary work ethic and fluid shooting mechanics, I'm very sure he would be a competent 3 point shooter if he devoted more time on it.
This is the guy who added a GOAT level fadeaways, one of the most difficult moves to master, as his go to moves after he hit 30 yrs old - I'm willing to bet he could've been a 40~45% 3 point shooter if he worked more on it.

Agreed If he was born 10 years later he would be a much better 3pt shooter nobody cared about that when he was coming up.

Kobe did. But the NBA changed. It's far more PnR and 3-point centric than ever. Kobe changed his game and started shooting 3's at a far more prolific rate as his career progressed.

The only perimeter player that stays strictly close to mid-range these days is Wade.

Phil made a good point though. Mj hands were huge he was palming the ball no problem. His ball fakes are legendary.

Smh.

I feel bad for those who didn't get to watch mj in real time. Like how good he really was. And his competitiveness too. I don't think there's a bigger a$$hole when it comes to wanting to win than mj.

Man ain't nobody talkin bout curry. Curry a great shooter. That's about where it stops. Curry need to worry about keepin his toothpick ankles together.
Case in point, imagine Steve Kerr telling Michael Jordan he wasn't allowed to play during the playoffs. :childplease:
