That meant that if you weren't married as a woman after a certain age, you would end up on poverty or become a burden to your relatives who had to provide for you. That's also why in some societies there were rules such as if a man dies and his brother is not married, he has to marry his brothers widdow.

In ancient societies, no matter if monogamous or polygamous, marriage was designed to secure woman by giving them a legal status which they didn't have by themselves. Polygamy was a solution to the problem that often times, there were far less men than woman around, because men went to war and died.
