I have a question for people who were around during this time.

But I heard biggie caught some flack from those anti-material rap fans, and some rap acts dissed him to because of his rap content

Im aware of the boot camp diss, some say Roots dissed him to though.

It's mainly because LAD was kinda heading into "shiny suit"/jiggy territory. I've even heard that Big wasn't really happy at badboy because of it.

I always thought this track was taking a shot at Bad Boy not only because of the song name but because it's a basic 80s sample loop basically mimicking what Diddy/Trackmasters were doing

Nah it wasn't the same. Even the most backpack of backpack by 2001 admitted Jay was nice not so much for X. Jay is more traditionally skilled than X and he wasn't gimmicky he was just very commercial. That Blueprint album really turned Jay into a rapper every facet of the genre loved.

X was more for street nikkas and commercial fans and SOME "not nerdy" underground heads. Jay was for everybody. Girls, street nikkas, nerds, hustlers, etc

And I'm not saying you need to listen to certain music to get p*ssy, really that phrase is just more of a term we use for nikkas that are usually socially awkward and outcast. Not that they literally don't get p*ssy lol.

I think you missed my point. I agreed with you about that, but nikkaz was giving Jay-Z shyt too. They generally gave him credit for being a skilled MC but also ton of shyt for his "commercial wave" of materialistic content & jocking Biggie too much. I was referring to the late 90's not the Blueprint time. We were talking about ca '98, no?

And btw, there is no one for "everybody". I get your point but that isnt true. There's always gonna be a crowd & demographic of naysayers. Ain't street nikkaz & hustlers the same crowd/people my nikka? Lol. I'd still say not more than a bunch of others. As for girls, yeah, but again we werent talking the BP era. That was basically when he won over alot of women cuz of the Beyonce relationship & some of his more melodic music & features obviously. But mostly Beyonce. But in '98-'99? He didn't appeal more to women & street nikkas than a few others cats.

I know, i know dog lol. I'm just saying why some nikkas relate to that "underground music" as if that goes together. So if a nikka likes "commercially", "popular" music that mean he/she a super social, cool nikka/chick? Nah. Not even. More zombie like tbh. Followers. But my point was in the end it's just music. Don't get how listening to rappers to really spit co-relates to socially awkward people..like wtf.

Roots always say they didn't diss them it was the director's decision to do it, but sounds like a cop out to me

I remember Questlove on Juan Ep said after Biggie died, Quest was in some club with Mos Def and Diddy came in with like 15 goons, and they brought them into a room and he basically yelled at them for 2 hours lmaooo

I got you. Yeah he did get some slack for being commercial true but his skills were at least respected. X's weren't by the backpackers.

I don't know by 1998-1999 Jay was liked a lot by everyone. Of course, not every single person liked him but he had fans from every walk of life and a lot of them. He was at least respected by different genre of fans. That wasn't the same for the other popular rappers of that era. Even Eminem, who had the underground and commercial fans but never really had the Hood or grown women.

Lmao nah I know, it's really not about the underground so much as it's about the underground fans dudes that be on some "fukk everything commercial" shyt, those dudes usually mad lame in real life.

why do people say this!?

Pac started having stans when he got out of jail.
That year long run had everybody loving him.
exactly. Theres tons of threads you can find on the google archive dating back to 94 or 95 that would attest to this. Dont know why nikkas keep saying this.

There's a difference between having that moment where everybody loves you as the hot commodity and where we are now with 2pac and "GOAT" discussions in general.

Nobody was talking bout ALL TIME GREATS yet, there wasn't enough history. I don't even remember nikkas making top 10's like that either. People obviously discussed their favorites but Pac being "GOAT" even before the term was used is revisionist. You really had to see how much his absence (and big's) changed the culture and how the world reacted to his legend after the fact.

thing is...Pacs track record lends itself to being looked back at as GOAT.

Every record had at least 1 big single.
Pac had hood love from the beginning.

Brendas Gota Baby
I Get Around
Dear Momma
AEOM
Makaveli
All the unreleased stuff
Classic Interviews & Personality

Nobody else has had such a hot run like that.
I cant think of any rapper that has a body of work like that.

Plus...that year on Death Row people were straight up stanning Pac.
I remember that time period.
AEOM got played out so hard for like 3 yrs straight.
People loved Me Against The World.

You have to remember...people my age (im 33) basically grew up w/ Pac.
I still remember when I first heard Same Song...so we pretty much grew up w/ dude.
so yea...there are going to be a lot of people who feel he is GOAT in retrospect.

But I dont see how anyone cant acknowledge the fact that Pac in the conversation makes sense.

tupac, nas and the fugees had 96 on lock, followed by ghost, busta rhymes, outkast, xzibit, jeru and mobb deep. as far as jay goes, people barely noticed he existed :manny: and that's not even hating on jay, reasonable doubt was a good album that deserved more recognition, but it was overlooked in '96.

I'ma pretend you didn't throw Jeru and Xzibit in there with those others, while sayin' people barely noticed Jay existed... stop that :russ:

'96 was Pac, Nas, Fugees, Bone Thugs (still carrying over from '95- 'Crossroads' remix was the peak of their success), LL, Lil' Kim, Foxy, Outkast, Busta, Mobb, Lost Boyz, Ghost, and a few others... Jay being somewhere in that group...

And nobody EVER says he was 'one of the hottest' in terms of being 'hot' the way it's often described. No one ever says he was a superstar or anything like that. But when nikkas try to put him in the Mic Geronimo/Heather B/Jeru/Xzibit/Smoothe Da Hustla category, ain't a chance in hell, breh. That's an overexaggeration at best and a lie at worst. How you have an album go gold, a single go gold, and featured on a GANG of songs, and a 'nobody' at the same time? :mjlol: Cut that out...

It was Becuase Mos Def performed Children's Story and pretty much Dissed Diddy while Diddy was in the front row.

Quest said Diddy was yelling crazy shyt like "Biggie had love for y'all and I'm a real nikka who does real shyt! Like fukk two bytches at the same time!":mjlol:
