Now I don't know if this is revionnist but the whole "Dilla saved my life" movement is forced as hell to me, I mean we all know breh did some amazing songs and all but to have him as the GOAT producer? :jbhmm:
Classic example of "dead _____ get better promotion"

He was definitely respected in the hiphop community but outside of Okayplayer type fans, he wasn't rated highly like that until his death

It's mainly because LAD was kinda heading into "shiny suit"/jiggy territory. I've even heard that Big wasn't really happy at badboy because of it.

Pimp C got at Roots for this too

No one ever talks about it :francis:

Stans? Yeah. Goat convos? Not so much.
None was using that goat term so obviously it was used around the late 90 and early 2000, regarding Pac. None was throwing Pacs name around when the top 5 or 10 lyricist (hip hop head definition) discussion because everyone knew he wasnt that type of rapper. But they were if the topic was top 5 or 10 rapper or top 5 or 10 favourite artist. Dont understand how you nikkas conflate the two.

Nothing more and nothing less.

tupac, nas and the fugees had 96 on lock, followed by ghost, busta rhymes, outkast, xzibit, jeru and mobb deep. as far as jay goes, people barely noticed he existed :manny: and that's not even hating on jay, reasonable doubt was a good album that deserved more recognition, but it was overlooked in '96.

Xzibit barely sold 300,000 with ATSOL but you want people to believe that he was bigger than Jay who had a commercial hit? i don't think Paparazzi was bigger than Ain't No nikka even though it is a better song IMO.

Jay-Z is my favorite rapper of all time so idk where you were going with this

But he was never he hottest rapper out at any year. You're acting like that's an insult. It's a compliment. He's too strategic to take the #1 spot. He just was always #2. Would you rather be #1 for one year and off the radar for the upcoming years or #2 for 10 straight years

Hov

Hov was not the hottest rapper in 09 that was Drake. Stop it. And 01 is debatable but I don't think it was Jay. Not because I don't like Jay but because like I said...Hov was always not as much as a superstar on a level DMX or Eminem was but more of a strategist artist who was always moved in a way that would prevent himself from over saturating the game. This is the mistake 50 Cent made and the reason why no one likes his music anymore. And plenty of people say RD was hottest in 1996. Mainly younger folks who were in diapers at the time who don't understand or remember that The Fugees were a thing. or that Busta Rhymes once was a big deal. Or that 2Pac had rap in a headlock in 96. Hov is pretty much the only rapper from 96 to last til today and still be relevant on a universal scale meaning many of his fans are from this age...and those same people went back listened to RD and automatically think "it must have been big when it was out" not realizing Hov was viewed as Foxy Brown's bodyguard or some shyt initially..probably to anyone outside of Brooklyn. Or NY
hov was the hottest in 09

Bp3 was easily the biggest album of that year on a commercial and impact to the culture level

From doa being a moment in hip hop

Empire State of mind being the biggest song in hip hop and being the team song song to the championship winning Yankees and being his first and only number 1 song

2pac was a faker who became a hardcore rapper after he got out of jail

J Prince was feared by everybody (Big Mike :salute)

Death Row was feared by everybody (Uncle Luke :salute:)

That hip hop was always raw and rugged before, and never had corny azz dancin' songs (humpty dump), it's all the fault of the new nikkaz

Pac was huge. Of course he was a favorite of somebody's. How else would he have sold so many records? No Tupac is the best rapper ever talk until after he past.
I didn't mean goat as in the word for word acronym.

No he wasn't. Aint No nikka was a cool lil single that got radio and RapCity play like a gang of other tracks that year..there was nothing special about it..none of the other singles made any real noise like that either. He was pretty much "that dude that be with Foxy" in 1996.

RD is a classic album in hindsight but when it was released it overshadowed by MANY other joints at the time.

Pac,Nas and Fugees ruled 96 with a iron fist.

This is true. Jay came out during a incredible year for hip hop. I still bump Reasonable Doubt but there was soooo much fire that year.

Lauryn Hill had '98, but that's the closest Jay got to having a year. I understand arguments of him having '98, but I put Lauryn Hill above him, and DMX as well.

However, Jay didn't have 2009 at all. Neither did Drake. 2009 definitely goes to Lil Wayne, with Eminem right behind him.

And T.I. was definitely the man in 2006, no questions asked.

This is true. The backpacker nerd rap fans didn't like DMX because they felt he was too gimmicky. I remember them days. But they would say "Jay is good" but "DMX is a hack" was pretty much the theme for the Sage Francis, Atmosophere/hip Hop Infinity crowd. Aka nikkas that don't get p*ssy brigade.

Fans of slug may not have got no p*ssy.
I know for a fact, slug and one man army were smashing all the groupies in their way back then.

This is something that had me like :wtf: when brehs are saying Bones was bigger than Wu-Tang and them :dahell:

The dilla love is forced because it took forever for that crowd to even like the first slum village album.
I know, exclusively people were late on dilla.
If people loved dilla so much really.
They would never give mbdtf a classic as that album is a lift of dilla eclectic production and music.
