Most of the "ignorant" rappers are more intelligent than the "conscious" ones.

what does this have to do with anything

at all

Why shouldnt it, if you are going to compare the two. Im simply adding context to their respective careers. Often when people talk about nas they go back to his earlier days....People rip Nastradamous and I Am....well, he was like 25-26 when he made those records. Age and maturity arent factors we can consider now? Interesting.

I have NO problem with the rappers I bolded.

And I can tell how much disdain you have for actual talent if you're writing off Gucci.

Fair enough...that speaks for itself. LIke what you like, and what you enjoy listening to....its a free country.

I stated in my first post that OP was generalizing. However, the point of my posts in this thread is to show that just because a rapper makes a socially conscious record doesn't mean they are doing more for the community than the shallow rappers(the ones who are actually doing something).

The topic of your raps shouldn't be that decisive of a factor when accessing how much of a positive impact a rapper has on the community. This is particularly true in this day and age where, we KNOW for sure what the problems are in the community. In science, once you find out what the problem is, you start to perform experiments to devise a way to solve that problem, if you keep repeating the hypothesis over and over again, without any solutions, nothing gets done.

For this reason, I feel socially conscious songs are losing its effectiveness, its become boring and repetitive because we KNOW what these problems are, what is being done outside of the studio is what we should be focusing on.

If a socially conscious rapper backs up his raps with actions, great! then that is the perfect scenario. I don't feel a lot do though, and this is my (and I suspect many others) issue with the necessity to being socially conscious in records.

Also, for those that look down on lighthearted records, one should remember that people react to problems differently. After being on, say for example, the receiving end of a racist remark by a racist white Manager at work. Some people my find solace in listening to white manz world by pac, others might just want to listen to something light hearted, loosen up and not get depressed over it, even though they're radically different types of music, they can both do their jobs effectively in the said situation, depending on the person.

Each type of music has its own merits and the gripe a lot of people have with conscious music is the holier than thou that is often displayed against artists that chose not go in that direction.

You're digging too deep here. The music is the stand alone measure here. People come to the rational conclusion that an artist who promotes positive, uplifting, and thought provoking themes, has more value as an artist than one who's content revolves completely around killing niqqas, fcking hoes, getting drunk in the club, poppin molly, and spending the rest of their time counting money and shopping.

Yeah, I guess many of these ignorant artists have more capital to help improve their communities, or family structure as it were, but thats an impossible position to put a principled artist in...basically its like "well, if you're not smart enough to make brain dead music, and make money, then you dont care as much for your communities as the rappers who do and make money". Its like saying a drug dealer that has his family living lavish, and organizes turkey drives, cares more for his community than the bus driver who quietly feeds him family, and sits in on NAACP meetings.

Imagine if a record exec told Marvin Gaye to scrap whats going on, and make an album that sounded like Elvis, and was more pop oriented. Fck man....let artists be artists. Why does everybody need to sound like fkcing Drake and Wiz Khalifa?

you might have a point. Alicia Keys was always seen as this piano playing classy woman who was supposed to represent the new era of young women.....but she was carrying on with a married man and ultimately he left his wife and kids.

I'm not judging any of them for their actions, but it is funny to look at the contrast of their image vs reality

fair point, and one that I think is worthy of addressing...but I still think a lot of what you'd call "ignorant rappers" especially the ones that have been around a while, are a lot more worthy of distinction than they appear to be.

well, lets look at that. i think chief keef is ignorant, along w/ boosie, webbie. i dont want any of the youngins in my life ever taking a damn thing they say seriously. add gucci on there also, to a slightly lesser degree (not much though). he's made it back after being incarcerated, which is commendable, but he's a jailbird and he kicks women out of moving cars...know what, put him directly in that group with the other rappers. i watched an interview w/ him on the breakfast club and they handled the nikka w/ kiddie gloves like he just got off the short bus. jeezy put it perfectly soon thereafter on the same show. "nobody take him seriously." he might have some bread, but he's the big joke that no one has the desire to reveal the punchline on, yet because the joke keeps on giving, or we're just too lazy.

to the original point, i also forgot to add "shallow" to the confusion list. you can be very shallow whose ignorance is subjective, but certainly still be conscious. kanye comes to mind

So when put in the context of fat hoes and head, you all of a sudden understand? Proves the point of the whole thread.

I was being sarcastic. Truthfully, I dont believe only fat girls give good head and I damn sure dont believe you have to be ugly to be a good worker
You're a fukking joke

Damn dude, you got really offended. I agree with you, I don't believe you have to be ugly to be a good worker either, but overwhelmingly statistics show that less attractive people work harder, out of necessity. I've seen it in the healthcare, manufacturing and entertainment industry. Once again, I think I came off a little too abbraisive in my initial post where I said "dumb people" and for that I apologize, but other than that, I'm not sure why I'm a "fukking joke" but oh well.
