hard knock life had like 6 singles in 98

the saturation method was one of his best contributions to the industry for the time to make an impact.
yet, mos def was better skillwise in every possible way in 1998.
incomparison to jayz, who was in his most blatant dumbed down period in his career.
while mos, was writing hof entries on cadence in rhyme writing on some up skill, next level shyt.
on top of keeping the culture true.
after the shattering of the glass ceiling from the death of pac/big.

mos was getting people to buy magazine for pullout vinyl singles...that covered bdp, and were the breath of fresh air needed after the jiggy bullshyt.

when did vol. 1 come out? was it 97?

yes

November 1997

I love the album and think it was lyrically his best work outside of RD. But I think it was viewed as a let down because:

1. While it went Gold (and Platinum, slowly), it was not a HUGE hit. Jay had to wait until Vol. 2 to really blow up

2. It wasn't as critically acclaimed as Reasonable Doubt

in 97,...he did not have the biggest song.
nor, did he have the commercial viable sales turnout that krs had.
nor, did jay have the type of records as good as the soundtrack leaks, a friend and others from the highschool high soundtrack.
that were so dope,..they had to be on, I got next.

in 98,...mos had the best singles and the most consistent skill output on features outside of Eminem.
in 98-99, the only reason why Eminem was not the best was.
Eminem was transistioning from underground draw to major label draw.
yet, in 99....
you have to give jay the best rapper, because his company actually held it down and created the top draws for rap from the theatres to the records, on some crush groove shyt.

skillwise, though...volume ii needs to ramp up jay, was in the transition to adding more umph back into his content.
from the standard technical base on volume ii.

A Friend is a great song. As is 'word perfect'. But, people kinda shat on 'I Got Next' a bit. I'm just talking in general, Jay Z was starting his run around whenever that VHS tape came on the heels of Vol. 1 and from that point thru Vol. 3 he was next level to me. Once that Dynasty bullshyt dropped it was over for me.

that is why I mentioned a friend and the other highschool high tracklist adds on, I got next.
as that was the consensus's idea on a friend and the other record on the highschool high tracklist.
as the popularity of that movie soundtrack.
people were upset it was included,..yet, real talk....
those records should have been on the krs album.
as they were that good,..they should have been on the longplayer as well.
plus, it was the best single that year in a jiggy dominant time.
that, made step into the world.....
the go to record, that still is a go to record.
everybody plays stepintotheworld...a culturally accepted and dope cover of blondie.
which solidified how you cover or do a culturally enriched joint.
unlike the bullshyt, that puff did to the message on that blasphemous record that has no name to me.
plus, puff lied and used krs to gain some space credibility wise
where krs has to apologize for being duppped by puff.

it's the most commercially viable and actualize horrorcore album ever made.

The sales argument? Really?

With the exception of a few songs, there is nothing relatable about the album to the mainstream.

He became so successful because he was a marketable white rapper who wasn't terrible.

krs, juice, and mos would have bodied dude that year.
if he was even of the type to really be about that life as an emcee, for real.
withouth being flanked by sauce and jaz to save his ass from getting served.

krs : would have cultured him out to pasture in 97.
as the jiggy movement had not fully permeated the industry and the sales spike era rap fan.
to fully supercede or vault past the culture.

mos : would have gotten him as well.

juice: I'll lay you nikkaz in a casket wit'cha cristal....

It's funny. I'm rebuilding my Itunes since I punched my sony vaio three weeks ago and had to buy a imac. this morning i put the high school high soundtrack on there. that is a loaded soundtrack.

i woke up humming "ain't what you want baby, it's what you need baby" and spent my entire cup of coffee trying to place what song that is and where in my library it resides. muthafukkin wu wear.
