speaking of Jay....in retrospect....volume 1 has gotta be the most irrelevant album ever released, possibly in any genre. I have not heard one reference to this album since the turn of the century...Its like it was never released.
The commercial singles really made this album harmful to a lot of people. But it's still a GREAT record, with songs like Rap Game/Crack Game, Where I'm From, A Million & One Questions, Lucky Me, etc. I get why the commercial singles made people hate it so much, though

The album doesn't age well at all and the content is too juvenile and cartoonish.
Definitely aged well, IMO. Album had Stan and The Way I Am, Em's most undeniable classic solo songs aside from Lose Yourself. And the rapping on songs like Criminal, Kill You, etc. was eons above most other rappers out around then. Remember Me still gives me chills. Only songs I'd say that didn't age too well are Under The Influence (which still had solid verses for a crew track) and bytch Please II, which just didn't really fit with the album

As far as albums widely considered to be classics Life After Death definetely falls short in my opinion with a good amount of--not exactly filler tracks but, songs that don't quite reach the critical quality of the album.

The Fix is a good album but just that, hardly classic, GRODT dope album once again but classic?? doubt it...

the fix is a classic cause the technical skill scarface employs was hardlined for a southern gangsta rapper.
the technical skill revolution really was not sweeping through the south just yet, rap wise.
so, scarface's record is what helped solidify the need for more southern technically sound rappers.
that record could be looked at as the start and aid of southern lyricism finally creating a technical rubrick or standard.

this.

and tribe's 1st album.

I don't count the net nerd or noob picks as being considered classics, so I wont bother listing them.

tribe's first three records are classics.
plus, classics in the sense that they added onto what was built previously.
not to mention,....
tribe's first record kept and fleshed out what vibes and stuff was.
