“A leading social media researcher whose firm wrote a major report on Russian disinformation for the Senate acknowledged Tuesday night that he engaged in misleading online tactics of his own during Alabama’s hotly contested special election last year.
Jonathon Morgan, chief executive of the research firm New Knowledge, said he created a Facebook page under false pretenses to test his ability to appeal to conservative voters and bought a small amount of retweets — spending less than $10 — to measure the potential “lift” he could achieve in social media messaging.
Morgan said that he took these actions in his own capacity as a researcher seeking to understand the mechanics of disinformation tactics, not as New Knowledge’s leader, and that neither tactic was intended to affect the outcome of the race between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones, who won the race and is now a U.S. senator.
New Knowledge anchored one of two comprehensive new reports on Russian disinformation released by the Senate Intelligence Committee this week. And what they were trying to do is figure out, you know, what would make people vote either for Jones or against Roy Moore? For example, arguably the most controversial tactic that's in the document speaks about creating fake evidence - what they call a false flag - that Russian bots were supporting Roy Moore.
So they put out some sort of hints about this on Twitter. There are some tweets out there that have Cyrillic characters - the Russian language - suggesting that they were Russian, and then it was spread around. It actually generated some headlines at the time. A couple of news organizations bit on this and reported that Roy Moore was being supported by Russian bots.

I don't doubt that this woman came with an agenda but when you think about it, it's not without fault on Yvette & Tone's part. How do you spend years building a movement online only??? There's little to no references in the real world. So imagine someone like our pops' turning on the TV and hearing how there's this group of people online calling African-Americans 'Descendants Of SLAVES' of all things... Wtf are they supposed to think?
