This whole ADOS thing makes me very angry. Culturally I grew up black American. Went to black schools, learned about black history, embraced black culture, have started non profits with my sister to help black kids in the goo etc.

My problem is not with the designation, but the scapegoating and demonizing of other blacks.

You have not seen me scapegoating or demonizing anybody.

However, I am a proponent of the designation of African American, because that is a people that are descended from a relatively small group of initial people (380,000 to 500,000 total) that were brought to the USA over a period of roughly 250-400 years. Those people are from clearly defined regions in Africa, namely West, Central and Southeast Africa; who developed their own distinct culture in the fields of education, business, medicine, legal, political, humanitarian and arts/entertainment (music, literary, etc.). That is not even going into the numerous inventions that are from the ingenuity of African Americans.

What I have noticed is that nobody gets upset when somebody says that they are Jamaican, Nigerian, Dominican, Kenyan, Haitian, Ghanaian, Ethiopian, Somalian, etc. However, as soon as somebody states that African Americans are their own group as well; then everybody chimes in to claim that is not true and that every Black American is an African American, because they are from Africa or they are descended from slaves in the Americas too. That position is clearly incorrect, because while they are Black American; they are not African Americans due to their not being descended from the slaves that were brought to the USA (formerly British North America). Note that the census form uses Black or African American.
