:beli: at anyone thinking he was making 32 milly a year for MTV

Yeah I'm sure he's making a lot, but I doubt he's making that much. He has been part of the network for 20 years so I can see him getting big money.

I think there is more to it than just saying he makes 32 mill a year

He most definitely wasn't making 32m's a year for all 14 years, but those figures come from court documents, so yes, he could easily have been making around 32m a year for at least 5 of those years. But not all 14 years. The economics of TV and film are boring, but here's a small insight:

TV contracts at the beginning of a show usually last 7 years, and after year 7 you renegotiate. Some people have the power to renegotiate sooner, but most people are locked in to a rate at the beginning and only get a little wiggle room to get more money sooner. It might be different for unscripted, but probably not too different.

So when it's time to renegotiate, you sit down with an entertainment lawyer and maybe even a forensic accountant, and say "this show airs 24/7 on 3 networks and in 47 countries... the syndication rate to sell it is an estimated $XXXm, that means this show makes the studio $XXXm on a $Xm production budget, so as the lead host and face of the show, it's fair for us to ask for... $XXm"

And you negotiate from there.

So the question to ask isn't "is he really making 32m a year?" - the real question should be, "if he's making 32m a year, how much revenue was that show making the studio if they were willing to pay him 32m?"

21,000 per episode as an exec producer. 61,000 per episode as the host = 82k per episode (bonuses not included)

336 episodes per year = 27,552,000 a year. Base.
