average kid from the hood like me isnt going anywhere. i cant afford the bus fare to go pick up an unemployment check let alone travel out of the country.

No. I've been there and seen it.
There are so many people in Manhattan with a ton of money. Money I won't be even close to ever making. Rather than being spread out between mansions on large pieces of land, they live in condos. The insides of these condos are like palaces. Right outside the condos are the city streets. I sometimes have a hard time imagining hundreds of people making as much or more money than Carmelo Anthony and all of them living in the condos on the Upper West Side. Hundreds.
I'm a country bumpkin of sorts, so in a small town, you'll have a small number of really rich people.
