Exactly...I've been saying the same thing whenever I post in a Spotify thread, that it's not doing shyt for the artists. The ppl that are acting like they're "supporting" artists by subscribing to this are completely misguided.

All these services are brokered between the service, and the record label. I'm sure the fat cats got a nice chunk of change up front, meanwhile the artists are stuck scrounging up the crumbs.

I didn't read the Original post..

But I rap..but when I drop my album..im not putting it on spotify because youre basically giving it away for free, but with pandora, they'll hear a couple of tracks in radio mixes and they might want to cop..or worst case scenerio, illegaly download it...but it's still good promotion..I don't care if pandora is paying me a penny per song played or not paying me at all because they're kinda promoting it..I don't know why an artist would put their stuff on spotify..shyt should be boycotted real talk..because they're not making any money and spotify isn't for promo..unfortunately I have a premium spotify account because I only have an ipad and can't download shyt..but at the same time..I wouldn't be mad if the artists didnt support spotify and deaded that app..more power to em..

anyone who thinks not putting an album on pandora is going to cause more sales is kidding themselves. the music industry tried that for years and their whole business collapsed. they have to embrace the internet and find a way to get some $$$ out of it

I read up on the article in the original post -- dude is highly exaggerating the scenario & only presenting part of the situation: the $16 that he's talking about was just HIS PORTION of the publishing for writing the song. but he also gets a different bigger check for the performance royalties since he's also the artist, not just the writer, & apparently Pandora favors "performers" over "writers".

both checks being just HIS PORTION of much larger checks split between the rest of his bandmembers (alt rock band Cracker), label & whoever else, for basically one single song from 20 years ago. In the comments he actually alludes to other things that he left out of the equation to make it look more dramatic than it actually is.

the basic take away that i got from the article is that Pandora gives more $$$$ for being the "performer" than for being the "writer" -- which is actually a big advantage for Rappers since they notoriously get sharked on their publishing & split the writing credits with all the artists they sample.

that's a complicated thing, as far as writers & producers & whoever else getting slightly shafted in favor of the "artist" themselves, but considering the amount of fukkery that artists have to wade thru from the traditional royalties system I kinda feel that as some type of Affirmative Action.

uhhhh NO :shaq2:

In most cases unless the artist hasn't signed a licensing deal or publishing contract and is truly INDEPENDENT like let's say a TECH 9

he or she has NO SAY SO as to whether their music can be streamed

it is up to the PUBLISHER or whoever own the right of the music , in the case of Em and 50 it would be the distributor...

and as far as PANDORA they are FULL OF SHYT.........

these mofos HAVE BEEN LOBBYING CONGRESS hard lately just to STARVE ARTISTS more and more ...the payout they are handing out is JUST CRUMBS ON THE TABLE...

they doing all types of slick shyt...like purchasing a terrestrial broadcast station in the middle of west bubblefukk America (rapid city, south Dakota)
in order to qualify as a TRADITIONAL BROADCASTER like and AVOID THE "DIGITAL ROYALTIES" that deem to steep to be paying....:jawalrus:

these MUFFUKAS ARE DIRTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :damn:

http://www.spin.com/articles/pandora-south-dakota-radio-station/

By buying an FM radio station Pandora is attempting to join the nation's other traditional radio stations in paying significantly lower royalties than it's currently obligated to pony up. Right now Pandora pays out more than half of its revenue in royalties, which is why it recently instituted a 40-hour free-listening limit on mobile devices. Meanwhile, terrestrial radio stations pay a scant 1.7 percent of their annual revenue for music royalties. Many of them also stream music online, meaning a station that combines FM radio with a web stream qualifies for the favorable rates.

That's the sweet spot Pandora hopes to hit and it's already getting sued for tying. BMI, a group that competes with ASCAP and collects royalties for publishers and songwriters, sued Pandora in federal court on Thursday. "Pandora’s stunt makes a mockery of performing rights licenses and the rate courts process," BMI said, while arguing that simply owning one radio station does not mean Pandora should qualify for the same rates as terrestrial stations.

What's crazy, is that these artists...know the rules of the game, then turn around and bytch when they aint winning big....when there is large amounts of money to be made, or paid out.... shyt is gonna get twisted, and you stand the chance to get jerked outta money.

are you gonna let your music make you money? or are you gonna make money off your music?:birdman:

cause those are two vastly different things.
