In that case, Adam (peace be upon him) was the first messenger. And I do not know what date that would be. To Moses, Noah, Yusuf, Ibrahim and countless other messengers.

Exactly in islam it states that the last messenger is Muhammad (peace be upon him) and no other messenger/ prophet will come after. We (as Muslims) are a part if Muhammad's (peace be upon him) umma. Meaning his group that has received is message.

I may be incorrect but didn't Elijah claim himself to be a prophet or messenger is god?

That is were it differentiates. Muslims cannot belibe Elijah is a prophet or messenger. Maybe an imam or a scholar but nothing more than that.

Elijah referred to himself as a Messenger of Allah not a Prophet...Prophets did their work and teachings in the absence of God, a Messenger delivers Gods message straight from Gods mouth...Both Jesus(pbuh) and Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) warned of someone that would come after them....and Elijah is the fulfillment of those prophecies

I know Jesus peace be upon him mentioned someone after him but I have not come across Muhammad peace be upon him mentioning someone coming after him. I guess it is a debate on semantics. Messenger can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Even if I was a scholar or imam I couldn't consider myself a messenger due to the last one already selected by Allah.

As far as the image goes, to say man was created in the image of god wouldn't that be limiting? In any case I respect everyone's faith/ religion We can agree to disagree.

The Quran does state that Muhammad peace be upon him is the deal of the messengers.
Surat al-ahzab 33 ayat 40. "Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men but he is the messenger of Allah and the last prophets ( the seal) and ever is Allah, of Allah things, knowing."

There are many many sahih hadiths claiming he is the last prophet.

Even the shahada when you testify to become a muslim you testify that is there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his last and final messenger.
