Do you think Target did the right thing in this? If so, what about other religions who may have prohibitions against serving things such as alcohol, cigarettes? Should the company accomendate (sp?)

MINNEAPOLIS — Muslim cashiers at some local Target stores who object to ringing up products that contain pork are being shifted to other positions where they don’t need to, the discount retailer said Saturday.

The Star Tribune reported this past week that some Muslim cashiers at local Targets had declined to scan pork products such as bacon because doing so would conflict with their religious beliefs. They would ask other cashiers to ring up such purchases, or sometimes customers would scan those items themselves, the newspaper reported.

Minneapolis-based Target Corp. has now offered its local Muslim cashiers who object to handling pork the option of wearing gloves while cashiering, shifting to other positions or transferring to other nearby stores.

“We are confident that this is a reasonable solution for our guests and team members,” Target spokeswoman Paula Thornton-Greear said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Greear said it as a localized problem and that it would be handled on a case-by-case basis.

“It is not an issue in most of our stores in the Twin Cities,” she said in separate comments via e-mail. “There is also no indication that this is an issue in the Minnesota market overall or nationwide.”

Islam teaches that pigs are unclean and eating pork is a sin, and some Muslims feel selling or handling pork is also forbidden because it would make them complicit in the sins of others.

This would be alright if Muslim countries also expressed a similar level or tolerance for other people but they don't. Islam is inherently backwards, demands respect from others and issues none of its own.

I hate to sound rude but fire his ass because capitalism has no moral basis.

If you can't do the job ask of you because of Religion than companies shouldn't cater to your mysticism.

Target did everything possible to accomodate this somewhat ridiculous issue. Wear gloves if you have to, or work somewhere where you wont have to possibly handle pork and as a result, feel so judgemental of how others choose to live their lives that something as simple as scanning pork on your barcode reader renders you complicit in the unholy sin of your infidel customers...since that's really what this "problem" is about.

Should that be put in the job description or asked during the interview process about pork

sure why not. will your religious beliefs prevent you from checking out a customer who is purchasing legal goods from our store?

someone should get one of those unloading positions in the warehouse and say it's against their religious beliefs to lift heavy things because a hernia is a sin against god.
