I remember when Lynn Greer was lighting it up at Temple. He had a legendary run in the NCAA tournament. My pops refs Public & Catholic League games so I did follow HS ball heavy. It's so dope seeing Kyle Lowry become what he is today after seeing him in high school.

I actually went to Upenn.....Would have been dope to meet his pops.
Greer was that dude :salute:

Hov does it bother Kobe that he dont get the love and recognition as a Philly guy?

Is it cuz he went to Lower Merion and not a Gratz or Bartram or even Roman Catholic?

You missed the Lynn Greer lighting up everyone years. John Cox was c/o '99. Lynn Greer '97. I was in HS during those times ('94-'98), so I was around for the Lynn Greer, Brokenkorough, Crenshaw, Sul, JK, Yah, Alex Wesby, Donnie Carr - that era. But John Cox's dad (Cubby) taught at Penn...my brother had him for some class. He also played in the NBA briefly.

Wow @ the niam Crenshaw shout out.
I went to Neumann for 9th grade and there were these two brothers there that were beasts ....I can't remember there names though. That era had so many legit philly ballas :ohlawd:
Dudes like marvin o conner barely get mentioned it was so many ballas.

My friend played for upper Darby which was in lower merlons division, I went with him to kobes crib once to "play" on his basket. I smashed one of his cousins girl too. I'll let this thread cook though. Not trying derail

i don't think kobe characterizes himself as a philly guy, and that's fine to me since he spent the majority of his life outside of the area.
i may be wrong with that but i vaguely remember him trying to distance himself when the topic came up during the 01 finals when philly fans were booing him

that being said dude def had a ton of philly influence since both his parents are born and bred philly heads with deep roots in west philly, he grew up a 10 minute walk from wynnefield, and spent summers in west philly with his grandparents and cousins.
i remember in the early 2000s i randomly saw kobe bryant by himself in east mount airy. he probably has all kinds of connections in the city, family and otherwise

Not UPenn, I meant William Penn HS. It's closed now. My bad. My sisters went to Dougherty and knew Kyle.

yea 29 on 40% shooting (by the skin of his teeth)
dude was a volume scorer with multiple seasons below 40% shooting.
not saying young kobe kicking his ass isn't impressive but cmon

So was AI

The only reason Kobe isn't claimed as a Philly guy is because Philly doesn't claim those that live outside the city, as "Philly." He's in the same category as Reke, Jameer, Rip, Wayne Ellington. The only time he really got the FOH was when he was tryna distance himself around the '01 season. But he still gets plenty of love and respect, especially tthese days.

Here's a short story - The Kobe Stimulus Package:

So, apparently, when my boy was in college, as all freshman are, he was broke as hell, and his parents would send him like $50 bucks lol. They werent tight on money obviously, but you know, some parents just make you get your own.

So, my boy said he had a Kobe autographed b-ball, that he was supposed to give to a Kobe stan (he said he was real cool with Vaneesa, so he would get her to get him to sign the stuff, so it wouldnt look like he was asking for 1000 autographs everyday lol).

So apparently, the Kobe stan is kicked outta school, so he is stuck with the ball. So, hes like wtf do I do with this - so ends up taking it to a sports memorabilia shop and they are like "Whoa, this is real", and give him $300 bucks. (how they verified it was real is still beyond me.)

So then he gets the bright idea to multiply this effort - so the rest of the semester, he becomes a mini mogul by getting Vanessa to send him a bunch of stuff, and he sells to to local shops, and makes super bank". Dope little come up.

So, one day, he gets the bright idea to sell a newspaper he had autographed. Now, this is a Philly newspaper, local sports (from like 1995-96) of Kobe declaring for draft. He said he got it signed as a joke, it was wrinkled, and only got Kobe to sign it because he made the front and the back of the paper. As in, "Yo - you made the front page AND the backpage of the newspaper - wtf. Sign both sides because this may be worth something fool :pachaha:"

So, fast forward - he brings the newspaper to the shop, and they say ":whew: - is 13 cool for this??"

He said "Hell YEA, $1300 for a old newspaper, damn!"

He says the shop owner is like " :heh:, $13,000"

So, my homeboy says, not only did I end up not making $13,000, but I ended up spending $100. To get it framed.

That's the frame that is still on his wall to this day, and I may even get a pic for yall one day, if it isn't too creepy.

Kobe is worth some $$$.

More actual personal Kobe & his cousins stories coming soon :smugdraper:

You know, I didn't ask that question direct, but I feel like it does. I literally sat there and thought about the 01 All-Star game where Kobe got booed and felt a little bad for him.

All my boys stories were like the history of Philly. Kobe did leave for like 8 years or something crazy, but was born there, came back still very young, and the stories he tells are like real, family, grew up with my boys around the neighborhood stories. So its like, man that guy is REALLY a Philly dude...

So here's another small story:

Kobe never hung out much at all, because he spent all his time with his GF. But, his GF was the #1 ranked basketball player in the nation (according to my friend), and was WAAAAAY more popular than Kobe.

He said all of them would be like :whoo::mindblown: "How the HELL did YOU pull HER??" and Young Kobe was just kinda like :myman:.

The funnier aspect to this story to my guy is moreso that this chick was worshiped by Kobe and way more popular, and not only did Kobe pull her, but she is like a "Who is that?" at this point...

Any of you Philly people have a name for her? Apparently her name was Christy or something like that...can probably Google her...
