I always say that about Kobe when compared to some of the other greats or even great wings from his career. His athleticism/natural ability was a full notch below MJ, LeBron, T-Mac and Vince. He absolutely maxed out his talents and overachieved.

Kobe's dad was in the NBA, and Kobe is a very athletic 6'6" baller who has had access to every opportunity possible to develop his skills his entire life.

Repeat, his dad was in the NBA.

In terms of both genetics and early upbringing/training, how could you get more natural ability than that?

I wonder why Glenn Robinson III, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Glen Rice Jr. didn't pan out if it's that simple as having a father who played in the league? :jbhmm:

By that measure, we could say Larry Bird overachieved too.

Kobe had amazing athleticism.......

Danny Green...still can't dribble or pass but has a 50 million dollar contract...when it is all said and done he will probably make at least 80 million dollars in the nba without being able to dribble...pass...or average one made freethrow per game...

Kawhi Leonard...number 15 pick in 2011...by far and away the best player in that draft...i don't care what you think you know about basketball their is no way you could have watched this dude play in college and think he ever could have turned into a player who could go toe to toe with lebron... players like wiggins and winslow...hell any 6 "7" perimeter player who is good at defense, should be paying kawhi royalties because now a team might draft you to be their franchise guy where before they would draft you to play defense and shoot corner 3's...and pay you like you only play defense and shoot corner 3's instead of getting that franchise contract

Kawhi Leonard is a good choice and answer.....although I say that he is heralded as a top 5 player and MVP candidate but isnt held to the same standards as them....thats another discussion though

Cedric Ceballos, Jeff Hornacek, and Goran Dragic.

All mid to late 2nd rounders.

Man the Suns used to be a sharp organization:wow:

Richard Dumas had the potential to be one of the GOAT 2nd rd picks.

Another non Suns player I can think of is Gilbert Arenas

:childplease:

And there are a lot of 7-footers who never made the NBA, but that doesn't mean that being 7-feet tall isn't a huge advantage.

105 of the current NBA players have a father who was an elite athlete. That's a huge number. Obviously, having a father who was an elite athlete AND who played NBA ball AND growing up among elite ballers your whole life AND being 6'6" AND being an elite athlete yourself are a big set of advantages (not to mention getting drafted into the Laker organisation). Kobe wasn't disadvantaged in anything.

The fact that Bobby Hurley was even an NBA player puts me and everyone on this board to shame.

He was 6'0", 165 pounds, and had no discernible natural athleticism. (Though he did have a coach-dad, so his bball IQ was high.)

Goes off pure work ethic and knowledge of the game to become a 1st-team All-American, starting point guard for back-to-back NCAA champions, Final Four Most Outstanding Player, picked #7 in the draft.

Then one month into his rookie season, he gets in a horrific car accident and is nearly killed. A station wagon slammed into his car, he's thrown 100 feet into a ditch, suffers collapsed lungs, broken ribs, fractured shoulder blade, torn tendon in his knee, and breaks his freaking back.

And he was back in the NBA by the time the next season started, though he never matched the ability he showed in those first 19 games his rookie season.

For him to come back from THAT and play 6 years in the NBA, at 6'0" and 165 pounds, always blew my mind. I don't care what his stats are - how the hell was he playing in the NBA?

Earl Boykins and Muggsy Bogues are on the list too, of course. I'll always remember Muggsy's perfect game (6-6 from the field, 4-4 from three, 8-8 from the line, 24 points, 6 assists, 0 turnovers.)

I think Paul Pierce is one of the most overachieving superstars in the league. He's 6'6", but otherwise has no special physical attributes, and he comes from a pretty humble background. Just worked his ass off to get better and better until he became a star, and eventually a champion.

You didn't have to be very athletic or big to be a successful pg in the early 90s. Mark Price, Scott Skiles, BJ Armstrong, Danna Barros were good/all-star starting pgs back then. Add that to the fact that Hurly played for a great Duke team.

Still 5'10 160 Scott Brooks had better NBA career than him

I know this answer a lot of people are going to disagree with....but:

LeBron James....

I feel, with all the expectations placed on him when he was just a junior in High School....he shattered every single expectation, when you take into account his body of work on and off the court.

And no I'm not a LeBron stan.

Manu Ginobili. He was drafted 57th overall, entered the league 6-7 years later than most young prospects would at 25, became an integral part of one of the most prolific dynasties in NBA history
UHHHH i get your point... but.. your point also goes to show you dont get the popovich scouting team...

parker went something like 19 no?
