I've learned somewhere that the British were trying to subjugate the Maroon communities and other Black indigenous communities in the South (especially the Carolinas), the Black folks that kept giving them that work were described as having a head full of locked hair. As a result, the Brits called them dreadlocks because of how much they dreaded the sudden and frightening appearance of these lock-haired Maroons without warning.
