I literally posted this in the other thread. I think the main reason why it comes across like excusing folks is when for example, Hillary called half of Trump voters deplorables, it immediately became interpreted as Hillary calling all Trump voters deplorables. White folks are uncomfortable w/ alienating white folks (and it ain't just Bernie) talking about racism because the default white American and the culture they live in is probably racist on some level.
