When "Define My Name" was brought up, it confirmed what I thought about it being a teaser or a hype song. I don't expect a beat like that on the album. Seems like Premier is more locked in when he has an actual project to work on and not just a one-off (PRhyme, One of the Best Yet, The Reinvention). It keeps him motivated like back in the day.

I must be the only one that likes "Define My Name". That second verse is dope!!

And I've said this before, Nas' voice is layered/engineered perfectly over the beat. Hitboy's engineer was hit or miss in this aspect.

I actually liked "Define My Name" a lot. Still play it every once in a while. But I knew its purpose. It was to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Illmatic and create hype for the album. It's a little more awkward to listen to now since the album was pushed back a year, but it's still a good song. And you're right about that second verse, especially the way Nas starts it: "DNA of King James, kin of Saint Michael/Polygamous minded, seven wives on ridiculous timing." :wow:

I love Define My Name. I brought the vinyl single:

And I have no idea why people thought it was going to be on the album, it was announced when it dropped that it was a teaser song to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Illmatic and to formally announce the Nas/Premo album was actively being worked on. Its a street single, never meant to be anything more.

Primo's problem is that he started listening to his critics. HIs same formula was still hot until they convinced him to switch it up. Since he switched it up, Alchemist and Griselda producers been using his classic formula ever since getting props as Primo out here looking washed up. That's the shyt that I hate. Critics will tell you YOUR style isn't good enough for YOU anymore, but give others props for using your shyt
