that illmatic didn't sell well was a failure but illmatic achieved a thing that a few if none other hip hop or even other genra album did. It bacame a bible a reference and a benchmark. None other album have books dedicated to it, a movie/documentary, two remakes album and the pride of being performed at the kennedy center backed by the nso. 20 years later it still talked about, how about you live guy who sold more but disapeared in hip hop limbs ?
