as for the Nas picks bad beats talk (which is 100% valid), it's that you have these artists who aren't as good lyrically who pick these beats that so sonically pleasing that it enhances the replay value of what shoulda been mediocre projects (Fat Joe is the patron saint of this). You just wish Nas would get those beats, so when Nas is working with those producers and he doesn't pick those kind of beats, you start having to assess blame. It's usually either Nas or Salaam Remi (since he overlooks a lot of his projects). Because Nas is such an icon, you'd think he can choose any beat he wants, so don't settle for weak shyt. The last 2 projects have been Nas trying to do with that with particular producers (I think everyone turned out to be dead wrong about what a Nas /Kanye project could bring even though I still maintain that Nas shoulda fought someone over those Daytona beats). This time, Hit-Boy delivered a happy compromise to those who want Nas on grandiose Justice League shyt and those who have no problem with Nas' ear.

So maybe it's not that he picks bad beats (none more than the average, especially Hov). It's that Nas misses the most opportunities to pick great ones.

I don't think he misses opportunities to pick great beats. You pointed out what most have trouble with when it comes to Nas's beat selection: comparing what he's rhyming over to what the listener thinks he could/should be rhyming over.

The beats Fat Joe rhymes over works for Fat Joe. Nas doesn't necessarily "pick" beats off of a disc or a playlist. He actually builds with a producer and they create the songs together as opposed to him getting a beat and spitting on it.

If Nas works with Kanye or Just Blaze, guarantee it won't sound like what they did for any other artist. People look at the names and immediately go to their other work for reference. When they hear a Kanye joint or Just joint with Nas on it, they diss it because it doesn't sound like what they gave Game or Jay or whoever.

Fam. Like I said. nikkas is corny. But imma disagree on the 9th shyt. He fukkin played himself and created a bullshyt narrative while Nas was at the top of the game. Ever since then Nas could never shake that shyt. How the fukk it look for them to praise 9th’s version of God’s Son to his face? He didn’t even work on THAT version. That shyt is an insult to the producers he actually worked with on the retail album. Salaam Remi got better beats on that album than EVERY 9th Wonder beat on God’s Stepson. So does Alchemist.

I was glad Parks played Get Down on the JBP sleeper picks and praised the album. Even Heaven was an excellent beat.

Hit-Boy did a very good job on this, mainly because he hooked up Nas with the same kind of laid back beats he gives Dom, and Dom ain't half the rapper Nas is and pulls it off.

son hit boy was a great choice on the part of nas who like me, i'm sure was tried of that he don't know how to pick beats narrative. nah, nas has always moved to the beat of his own drummer and choice sonic landscapes that served the story and not the other way around. nothing quick or gimmicky unless the intention was the few "let's hit urban radio with this one" tracks that we all familiar with

hit boy gave him the kind of crack that was palpable to the masses but still nas and he was in his duffel b. i knew it once i heard the ultra black concept record that this was gonna hit different. ye wasn't a horrible choice like nikkas say he was but it was uninspired ye and a little too far left for nas. if they gave us nasir album with them two nikkas in 2006 oh lord it would have dubbed everything out that year. but last legs psychotropic meds yeezy? no hate for the brother and his illness but nah duke

i'm just trying to figure out how esco been out the hood so long and still sounds connected to the streets. he blacked on everything but blue benz and car #85 is where his pen ain't really make sense lol. i'm about to take it to high school and rewind over and over mumbling until i know his shyt by heart. i'm also shocked that he worked so well with fivi and durk which shows that he had a clear vision for them joints and he just wasn't trying to pander to the younger demographic by throwing some random young popular nikkas on

this one shut up the haters that wanted this to be wack :banderas:

Not saying he gotta like 9th (9th aint been one of my favorite ppl for a long time). But to discredit him just because his opinion of nas doesnt align with the stans is nasty af

I see what you doing with that word stan.
Me I just like logic. That's how I live my life. I like shyt that makes sense
Saying nas picks bad beats with that heavy catalog of his is highly illogical.

Now if someone says "I don't like nas beats" that's a totally different statement. I can rock with that.

Because I know a lot of people prefer beats that have more energy. Head nodding Makes your body want to move type shyt. And there's nothing wrong with that

An aside, 2pac(goat status) first three albums was never known for their beats. But nobody ever says shyt
