I think he was somewhat able to do that already, starting with Stillmatic. God's Son was decent too...and then there wash the Lost Tapes...then there was Street's Disciple
then there was Hip Hop is Dead
I wouldn't really say that everything after IWW was whack. I would more say that Nas fluctuated in terms of overall quality of his albums. I do agree however, that Nas hasn't ever been in the same form he was on IWW, and LIG is the closest he has ever been in a long time.
Oh I def agree not everything after IWW is trash. Stillmatic is great, God's Son is solid; obviously Lost Tapes is great. But I think Nas is still getting shytted on for I Am and Nastradamus. If the OG I Am was released it would probably be considered nearly classic today, but the retail version has some ugly mainstream shyt. And Nastradamus...no comment.
Nas can go on a nice run now though. There will always be people who always say "it's ok but it's not Illmatic" but fukk em. Nas just needs to get another dope exec producer like No ID, who will help pick beats and shyt. I still think Nas made a mistake with Summer on Smash but overall the album had good production; still, he can get better beats.

guest appearances and very good songs outside his two studio records.
