You’re entitled to your opinion of course. But nah. Jay has proven over time to have a much better, more consistent ear for production than Nas. When Nas gets it right, you’re correct, he fukking nails it. When he misses tho, it’s either boring or jarring our just flat out trash.

Even when he worked with Kanye, Nas picked two of the most boring beats from Ye I’ve ever heard. It worked. But fukk... THIS is what the long awaited Nas/Kanye pairing sounds like?

Now think about the beats Jay chose from Ye. Same with Timbo. Same with Swizz and a lot of the producers they’ve shared, with the very notable exception of Premo.

To say Jay is average at choosing beats means Nas is below average. Because he’s definitely a level better at it than God’s Son. I still rank Nas ahead of him (might have to change it soon tho), but facts are facts.

This.

When Hip Hop Is Dead was about to drop, I remember thinking tthis album has to be Nas's best produced album with that line up. It was far from it. I think a lot of Nas's worst beat selections are ones where he tries to have the producer fit a concept. Like why get Scott Storch to produce a song like "Carry On Tradition"? Why get a banger type beat like "Hustlers" from Dre? Something like "Minority Report" or Snoop's "Imagine" would've been perfect for an introspective or reminisce joint. With Kanye I was expecting a more grittier, soul sound in the vein of a "Guess Who's Back".

Producer is mostly there to fit a concept though. Jay has a lot of people thinking its all about sitting and just picking from a beat tape and its not really like that.

I don't think Nas's process is going through beat tapes. He seems like he doesn't necessarily pick beat. He's one of the few that actually has producers create on the spot. My only gripe is that some of the producers he's had even the greats just didn't mesh well with the concept.

IMO, Life Is Good is the most consistently dope album Nas has had production wise since God's Son. Not saying the production on the albums in between was bad, but it was inconsistent.

nas album from 04 onward would have like 8 good songs / four good to okay ones/ four bad ones/

but the beats and ideas were all over the place

distant relatives was pretty consistent too

I dont know, I think the design of those beats you mentioned was more to be about the rapper's vocals standing out maybe. I was fine with the Kanye tracks on HHID. Carry on tradition for as great as what was rapping about (and probably the track definitive track in terms of the albums concept) could have been better sure but thats the way it is sometimes

Strictly speaking his process might be the right way even if it doesnt always feel like that

I agree that his approach is the right way. It sounds like a Nas album even when he gets a Toomp or Polow track. It seems like they created the track specifically for Nas.

nas is my favorite ever it just his albums on def jam had the same problem as lil wayne that it just a bunch songs and not an album and a lot of time the best stuff was not on the project

But all things considered if he's giving you 12 out of 16 tracks Im cool with it. I dont think his concepts and beats were all over the place except on HHID and Untitled.
