Its a highly competitive and price sensitive sector so the margins are not at all that impressive - they bank on higher volumes to deliver the bottom line.

I just quoted an article from Business week that states that labor expenses outweigh their profits at all COMPANY RUN non franchised McDonalds... They have the sources so follow the link and I'm sure the citing will be financial reports of some sort.

Raising the minimum Wage at these franchised McDonalds would have to be on a store to store basis, based on the socioeconomic background of the location. A federal hike would be dangerous..
