At the end of the day they aren't Indians. The only Indians are people with ties to India. :beli:

Gee, this is pretty stupid. They refer to themselves as Indian. Ask the American Indian Movement. They can define themselves however they want. "Native American" is just a bullshyt pc word made up by the Department of the Interior in a futile attempt to mitigate genocide.

The word "Indian" was just used by Greeks to describe the region of Asia in some cases or the entire Indian subcontinent, and it derives from Persian word "Hindu."

Anyway you look at it, they're calling themselves a word from English language to describe themselves outside of their native tongue, just like black people and the other "Indians" from "India" and every other non-white people in America. But they have the right to call themselves whatever they want free of judgment, unless you want to apply the same standard to every race.

Let them depict some black indigenous people in some logo and call the team some black tribe name and watch. Al Sharpton might burn down capitol hill.

All I am saying is as black people, as sensitive as we are about racial stuff we need to learn to be more aware of others feelings too on the matter.

We laugh when our comedians poke fun at other races but get our panties in a bunch if someone refers to some black girls as "nappy headed hoes".

Lets not dish it if we know we cant take it for a change.

I agree with you but you are posting under the assumption that this site is near 100 percent black when in reality its close to 40%.

No and no

If i had to guess I'd say this site is at least 70% black (all blacks not just american), 20% latino and 10% other.

Thats besides the point tho.

what if they changed the names to hawks, skins but kept the logo or vice-versa (change the logo but keep the name) do you guys think it would reduce the anger and tension?

what is more offensive....the logos or names? or are they both deemed as racist

In the redskins case it seems to be the name. A picture of a Native American alone doesn't seem to be the issue, however when combined with the name it's offensive. I don't think they like "Redskin" at all though. I like Warhawks or Warriors with the throwback spear helmet but its not really whether I like it or not.

I wouldn't want negroes as someones team name with a black man as the mascot even though a lot of non-blacks would say negroes is not offensive. But that's not for them to decide.

i say take all the imagery off sports and take all the names off the warplanes and other things they have in the military. In 20 years when nobody remember wtf an apache is we'll see how much they enjoy that.

I'd like to see the name disassociated w/ the logo somehow. Saying something else, just is :skip: I still say "Bullets" to this day.

"Redtails" isn't terrible, but it's going to take forever and a day to get used to that name.

I know those College used to use the "Native American" name, like Louisiana-Monroe, Arkansas State, Miami (Ohio) used a Indian logo, now only Florida State and Illinois have Native American names.

I don't think they mind if its tribe names like Utes, Seminoles, etc as long as it isn't offensive. They care about mascots though, Utah has changed from a real Indian, to cartoon-ish boy Indian, to white guy dressed like an Indian, to a bird.

I know Utah has a decent relationship with the Ute tribe but

"Before 1972, the university used the "Redskins" interchangeably with "Utes". The university discontinued the practice because "Redskin" is an ethnic slur and is considered offensive by most Native Americans."

That's in 1972, it's 2013 now, Redskins your move.
