does any of you even know why white people called them Indians in the 1st place ?

It's not that these teams are using the word Indians, but these teams are using a Native American image as they logo.

You should call out these teams for being stupid more than the Native Americans. Because like you said, they are not from India.

BUTTTTTTT, why are you not calling out these teams from using the people from India name and using a Native American image. Shouldn't you be calling these teams stupid for using a name with the wrong image?

Let them depict some black indigenous people in some logo and call the team some black tribe name and watch. Al Sharpton might burn down capitol hill.

All I am saying is as black people, as sensitive as we are about racial stuff we need to learn to be more aware of others feelings too on the matter.

We laugh when our comedians poke fun at other races but get our panties in a bunch if someone refers to some black girls as "nappy headed hoes".

Lets not dish it if we know we cant take it for a change.

I understand a lot of people on here and many black americans may espouse these types of attitudes, but I get really annoyed when people take one person's ignorance to extrapolate it onto an entire group of people. Somehow the comments of one person were somehow extrapolated onto black people in general. I get at double standards on here all the time, but I think you go to far in using that to someone critique black people. Most black people would not endorse this.

Second, I think it was you, but maybe I read wrong, but nowhere near 70% of this site is black. I agree with what you said otherwise though.

the only reason native americans accepted being called Indians is because that's the umbrella term through which whites have made the rest of the world aware of their existence
they shouldn't embrace it in my opinion but that's just me
so my question was for those who said they didn't understand why it could be seen as offensive

Comes down to intent with me. There is no malicious intent behind these names/logos. Yes a name like Redskins or the Indian's logo can be viewed as offensive....but they're not deliberately meant to offend.

But I'm one of the last people to get bent out of shape over race so whatever.

But black people, in general, especially in america, behave like this tho. And I'm not sure about the "most" part. It's hard to tell sometimes but I see your point and can respect that

All these teams should do the right thing and stop using these names if they are offensive to Native people.

Maybe Seminoles, Braves etc., can get permission from their respective tribes, but there is no justification for using the word Redskins in 2013.

Are you Indian though? if not, how can you presume to tell them what they should be offended by.

edit: I'm thinking of copping one of these

I think the problem is that the reason having a team mascot is to have something that represents your team as something to be feared i.e. lions, bears, or tigers. Now i have no problems with mascot names like pirates, cavaliers, or knights because those people were known for their fighting abilities and in some cases lawless behavior, something or someone to be feared. In my opinion, to give your team a nickname like the indians or the fightin whatever indian tribe comes to mind, implies that those people as a culture are something to be feared. Now if you're doing it as an homage to natives of the area fine, but lets be honest, red skins is not an homage to anything, but ignorance.

redtails make the most sense. it's tribute to the tuskeegee airmen in a team of (once) chocolate city (and those that left still live in the area by and large), we got a black qb, we invented the black qb, and we need to make it something respectful and righteous to atone for using this name for so long.

i'd like to keep the unofficial nickname SKINS tho :yeshrug:

The AP drops a new polls that says only 11% of America is for changing the name

Y'all die! :umad:

nationwide polls can eat a dikk, the majority don't support this team

who cares how long it's been? that's often the attitude of those in the wrong

"bu bu bu but it's tradition!", who gives a fukk :stopitslime: our anthem used to say "fight for old dixie", what awful awful person decided to change that and whyyyy? :stopitslime:
