My niece is insistent on joining the Navy (she'll be a senior in high school next year).

Who here is Navy? Any advice? She wants to enlist...I'm telling her officer is the way to go. I work for the DoD, have for years, I know the benefits of being an officer vs enlisted.

There is always Officer Candidate School, but I think ROTC in college would be the best best. Does the Navy reimburse college tuition for officers who were in ROTC?

An enlistment in the Navy, (with a "rating", which is a job specialization) is an obligation of 4 years active duty, 4 years of inactive reserve status.

How the GI Bill works

The first year, she will pay into the GI Bill $100 a month which automatically comes out of your paycheck. After the 12 month, $1200 "buy in" she's eligible to start using her GI Bill benefits. The basic GI Bill strategy is when you get outta the military, get accepted into college. The VA pays for your tuition and books at any State institution. Not sure how it works for private schools. I'm also not sure if she'll be eligible for the Chapter 33 version, which is for Post 9/11 vets. If she can get Chapter 33, VA pays 100% Tuition, books, about $1000 a month for rent, and they pay for any "certs" you may want. That's a simple breakdown of how it works.

I'm speaking from a federal employee's perspective.

I have seen people who have been officers walk right into GS-12 - GS-15 jobs after they get out (sometimes even SES) while some prior enlisted personnel struggle to find employment.

I said if you're going to enlist...join the Air Force.
