It'll never happen. At best what you're gonna see is one D-League team per pro squad. The NCAA ultimately wouldn't be the competition if we're talking about a true minor league. The overseas leagues which have better competition and pay better are the biggest hurdle. Also keep in mind, the D-League is meant for guys on the come up (in other words, a team couldn't send a vet down if they wanted to).

Last CBA had conditions for NBA sending players to the D-League though, if I remember correctly. I think it had to be approved by the player and they had to get called back up.

The Skal example only works because he was at Kentucky. He doesn't get a first round look if he comes from a smaller program... given the way he played anyways.
While you're right, what 5 star recruit wouldn't be able go to a major school?

Well the problem is nobody will pay attention and then all of a sudden players have demands. Somehow, playing for free <<<< having SOME money
This is what people are forgetting. Going to college and balling for a highly ranked program means you're going to get alot of publicity. Publicity the dleague doesn't provide. A top recruit can go to college and play average and still be a lottery pick or near lottery pick [Devin Booker for example]. But if they went straight to the dleague and looked average, it might make some teams question whether they should draft them. They're likely to look average against 22-25 year old fringe NBA talent in the dleague than against other people their age in college.

If you're a top HS recruit and can afford to wait a year, you still may be better off going to college.

In college you're still somewhat shielded from pro scouts and GMs, while in the D-League you're risking getting over criticized and over analyzed off the court, in practices, in the locker rooms, etc. Even if you suck in college, there is a lot of intrigue and unknown factors that can work in your favor, like what happened with Skal.

Top 3 picks could get that salary in hand shakes on a college campus by December. :ld:

Just can't see a reason to skip college to go ride buses and stay in shytty hotels to play in front of 17 people...if I had other options
Oh I hear ya.. but I am thinking if this won't cause a loophole see... big highschool prospect going semi pro

Is the wnba generating a profit these days? Lasr i saw it was bleeding money... If you take thr millions wasted and invest it in the nbadl it would seem pretty logical...
The Brooklyn Nets bleed money too. That's like saying if they were contracted, the D-League would eat better :heh:

One has nothing to do with the other. Diana Taurasi getting $100K is not keeping Manny Harris from getting something comparable.

Yeah but the nba as a whole generates money...

Tremont i dont know if you got a sister or cousin that plays for the liberty or something but if the NBA is spending millions on a project that loses money... And they reinvest those millions into salaries of nbadl players that seems like common sense business breh... Not sure how you can argue that?

Before the Ballmer stimulus NBA teams bled or bleed money. It's not as if there's this very finite amount of money or limited budget and it's being blown on the WNBA as opposed to D-League. The NBA isn't being forced to choose one over the other and with this pay raise, it's not coming at the expense of the WNBA. The WNBA isn't some money making machine, but the D-League isn't designed to be one either. If the NBA tomorrow said "fukk it, let's go all in on D-League and soup up salaries even more" they'd lose more money, simply because America doesn't support minor league anything. Not to make it a WNBA vs. D-League debate (as I said before, one has nothing to do with the other), but their business models and niches are different. The WNBA has a niche market (albeit a small one) and a feasible endgame goal. The D-League's main goal is...?
