The Ratings talk is so disingenuous. The Ratings didn't tank this year, they dropped in 2020 and have never recovered.

In the 2010s the NBA finals used to average 17-18 million viewers with close-out games getting 20+ million views. However, since 2020 they are barely averaging 11 million viewers.

The reason for the drop is obvious but in 2020 no one in the legacy media wanted to to discuss the ratings because to discuss why back then would lead you to the obvious answer.

They want to make this a talking point five years later 🤣

It's not obvious at all.
If you're going to say it's politics: the NFL leaned waaaay harder left, course corrected way harder, and is doing better numbers than they were before.
If you're going to say it's because of the lack of superstar power: the amateur tournament is doing better numbers, and that's filled with a bunch of no names.
If you're going to say it's because of streaming: other leagues wouldn't be seeing numbers go up.
It's a combination of many things, but 2 things you don't see brought up very often in this thread:
why should fans care about a league where 2 enormous narratives are: tanking (teams don't care about winning/the value of games) and load management (players dont care abuot winning/the value of games.)

The NBA brand is absolutely toxic for viewership from October through May, and they're learning that fans aren't going to magically start to give a fukk when the playoffs start when there's no narrative runway leading into it.

why certain "basketball fans" love to brag about not watching the NBA until the playoffs or even the final?
thats literally what being a CASUAL means. which is one of these people's favorite word. but they only use it when you point out something very obvious about a retired player from the 80s or 90s!

Tis is really the most important thing. Many major corporations have a TV marketing budget. Regardless of what the actual viewership is, they're going to pour that money into the most watched thing. As long as the finals is the most watched thing in June, that's where that company is going to pour their Q3 TV marketing budget at.

At no point did the NFL owners promote the protests the way the NBA did in the bubble.

Its one thing to have some players in your league protesting, it's a whole other thing for the entire league to participate in the BLM protests.

The NBA has used its platform to attempt to socially engineer the fans political views since Trump choose to ran for office in 2015.

The comments that LeBron, Steph, Pop and Kerr were making about Trump back in 2016-2019 could be associated to be the opinions of a couple of people in the league. But when Adam Silver sanctions an entire league wide protest, he is making the NBA's position very clear in the culture war.

The average super liberal Democrat doesn't watch sports while the MAGA Trump supporters do. So alienating more than half of the country isn't a smart business decision especially considering Trump won the culture war.

The NBA went from 19 million viewers watching game 6 of the NBA finals in 2019 to barely averaging 7 million in 2020 with LeBron in the finals.

the NBA and MLB average right around the same for regular season ratings.

is the MLB brand toxic as well from May to October?

They talked about SGA all year and him being MVP over joker. Stick to wrestling discussions my baby
They mention his name briefly and go back to LeBron vs Jordan or the warriors. These guys aren’t household names and the ratings prove it.

Idk if I said it in this thread but a before the series started my co workers asked if this is an OKC sweep and I said no. Throughout the series I then had people who never talked ball talking about it - one coworker who only plays/watches tennis tuned into games 4-7.

Perceived lack of competitiveness >>>>>> small market/lack of stars/ whatever the typical bullshyt is.
