Owners are the ones who pushed for the supermax, if the system is broken they’re the ones to blame :manny:

They were pissed about KD going to Golden State, and convinced themselves if OKC had been able to offer him the supermax then he would’ve stayed.

To me it’s been a failure because we’ve still seen multiple stars reject supermaxes and leave, and most of the guys who did get them ended up being bad contracts similar to those 10+ year, $300+ mil MLB contracts

But it is what it is

Unrestricted Free agency is not really good for anybody but the star players, and lowkey more players are taking extensions because the threat of being forced to take a minimum in their primes is real. Part of it is neither side really grasped how the raise in supermaxes and fixed aprons would screw the players.

I think next negotiations the players will try to the second apron removed or changed to be less restrictive.

Non stars dont have an issue getting paid. Hartenstein just got $30 mil a year. The real issue is the limitations. Its not true free agency because of the salary cap and max salaries and now aprons. They played the long game on the players and finally got what they wanted all along...a hard cap.

OKC’s book is funky and I think the owners Lowkey fukked themselves over with the 2nd apron as well. It’s not a hard cap, it’s a cap with stiff penalties over the luxury tax. We are going to see teams with players making 80 mil a year, and the owner paying 2nd apron taxes on top of that. It’s too much debt.

The Celtics are shedding salary after their sale, but other owners are just outright selling the team before the amount due is more than they can handle. The 2nd apron was a poison pill for the whole league.

Its effectively a hard cap as it is so punitive that teams are gonna do all they can to avoid it. And since it exists it gives them the cop out of "hey cant go over the 2nd apron :manny:"
