The game needs another nelly...not neccesarily that lane...but a dude to come thru completly different that put these nikkas on they heals....I had people from st louis tellin me nelly wuz really in them streets but I hit em with the :wtb: thinkin they wuz lyin cuz he wuz from they city and they wanted him to seem harder then he wuz....you HAVE to respect nelly for the fact even having cred for real...he never really pushed that shyt on people even tho it probaly woulda helped his career....can't think of too many rappers u can say that about post gangster rap era...u couldn't help but like his first album, caught me off guard...I remember seein promotion in mags but not really hearing any of this nikkas shyt andthinkin "who's this nikka"....but once that "down down baby yo street in a range rover:krs:" dropped everybody knew....and btw Nelly til this day epitomizes puttin ya city on...u realize how many nikkas from st louis who probaly shouldna got deals got deals got deals bcuz of Nelly? Can't think of another situation like it....maybe Lil Flip...but houston had a scene, labels just started taken chances after Flip...st louis ain't have no scene

Nelly was my first 'favorite rapper' :yeshrug:

Dude went diamond off of his first album, the album had ZERO features (Lil Wayne in 99 had some heat but let's be real) and like OP said he blew up almost overnight.

and the St. Lunatic album was pretty decent too considering they only had 2 decent rappers, a bunch of weed carriers, and a mascot in a half mask.

Wasn't a Nelly fan, but yeah- you don't see shyt like that everyday.

He was one of a long list of niqqas just randomly coming out on Universal in 2000. Yeah it's a major, but the Universal label itself didn't give a shyt. They were just tossin' rappers out one by one with no big setup or promo machine. Nelly wasn't on anyone's remix or album, affiliated with no major artist, just came out with a song people liked and the shyt blew up. Used to happen back in the day, but not in 2000. You didn't have rappers just poppin' up, known nowhere but their hometown, and sellin' multi-platinum 6 months later. Yeah, prob. won't see that happen again.

It really was an incredible feat & Jay E killed those beats on that album & others too. He was overlooked for his work in the early 2000s.

Whatever happened to Jay E??

His fall off was just as epic because he went from putting out two albums at once that both sold platinum to flopping. Immediately. No gradual decline like 50 or Luda, he just fell off a cliff.

I know that break didn't help him any but I actually thought people would be happy that Nelly was back.

It was gradual. Just high level. He went down with each album. It also didn't help that he dropped Brass Knuckles 4 years after Suit/Sweat & didn't have a record on there as good as "Over & Over" and "My Place". That plus him not being the new nikka anymore was what happened.

Country Grammar - 10x plat
Nellyville - 6x plat
Suit - 3x plat (released same time)
Sweat - plat (released same time)
Brass Knuckles - gold
