Its pretty obvious if you want to be a huge star, you need that major label machine behind you.

Nelly is speaking 100% truth. For a artist to have a successful independent career they have to be well educated though. They especially cant stay "off that molly water" :heh: They also have to have a drive that's out of this world. Keef doesn't want to show up to video shoots, interviews, shows, etc. so I doubt he would actually get out there and do the legwork a indie artist has to do.

I don't blame him though because unlike Mac Miller his family is financially dependent on him, so I understand his decision/the urgency to take the money upfront. Mac comes from a stable home and he has those Rostrum guys who got Wiz to where he is in his corner. Not to mention a lot of Wiz's success trickled down to Mac, so I guess you could say he took one for the team.

Someone like Tech 9 though has a fckn ridiculous grind because him and Travis truly built another industry within the industry and has recently been able to penetrate pop culture. Buckshot & Dru Ha over at Duck Down are another example of a independent conglomerate.

Publishing: is how you get paid royalties when your song is published via Broadcast, Telivision, Film, etc.

Masters: is the master recording aka if you own the master track you can alter and/or distribute that song commercially any way you see fit.

Labels are appealing to a lot of artists because there's already a system put in place that ideally allows them to be profitable off of their music. A label can also use its various resources to make a artist more visible aka a "star". Doesn't always work out that's way though.

As far as the thread, its all about what type of artist you trying to be ya feel me? Nelly was dead on with Cheif Keef, he is the type of artist that is better off indie.

However when it comes to cats like Kanye, Or Pharrell, or Drake, or even 2chainz. Where you can be known for and branch out to things more that jus music. A major is the only way to go.

Think of it like this. Cats like 50 cent and Dr.Dre made more money off business outside of industry in one year, than accumulated "masters" and "publishing" checks over their whole music career.

Edit: Im pretty sure if Nelly could go back in time to when he was jus starting out, he would still tell him self to sign to a major

True, but for a traditional act like Keef it isn't as beneficial. Gaga is international pop star. Keef's music doesn't translate to the rest of the world. A lot of us who fck with Keef don't even know what he's saying half of the time, so someone who isn't from the hood damn sure doesn't. They might "like" it enough to get wasted to it and wild out in the club, but they wont actually invest in owning his album.

Kendrick lamar's album on the other hand translates to people all over the world and he doesn't have a 360 because he came to Interscope with leverage. Same thing with Drake, so those 2 are caking. They aren't indie artist, but they aren't getting jerked either.

If 50 was signed to a 360 though Interscope would have got a healthy piece of that Vitamin Water deal. They would'ge took a nice piece of Dre's Beats too. The concept of a 360 deal is: we invested money, time, and resources into making you famous, so therefore all of your success is a byproduct of our efforts, so PAY UP!

Nelly did the right/only thing at the time he came into the game. At that time the Internet was nowhere near what it is today, so it was A LOT harder to connect with fans then. 50 was the last successful artist to come into the game before it went completely digital.
