FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Officially, the Jets' general manager search has begun.

They asked the 49ers for permission to interview Tom Gamble, their director of player personnel, ESPN Insider Adam Schefter reported.

Gamble is regarded as a hot candidate and should have other opportunities. The Jaguars also requested permission to speak with him about their vacancy, according to the Schefter report.

Gamble has spent 24 years in the NFL, including the last seven with the 49ers. He works closely with GM Trent Baalke, a former Jets scout. Gamble actually was on the Jets' staff under Rich Kotite, serving as a quality-control defensive assistant in 1995 and 1996. Gamble's father, Harry, is the former president of the Eagles.

One NFL insider speculated that Gamble won't have serious interest in the Jets because of the stipulation that Rex Ryan must be retained.

depends, if they hire someone who's really pulling the strings, is it the new gm or rex...if it's the gm he'd only have to put up with rex next season which is a lost one anyway

I think the problem is, there's too many other jobs out there right now you know. What's going to make anyone want to come to NY after this year, especially with Woody Johnson really being exposed as a huge part of the problem.

And you got Woody still smitten with Rex, I can see dudes saying fukk it. AZ, Buffalo, Cleveland, San Diego, Philly all look like better opportunities. Only thing worse is probably KC, Jacksonville

so why fire anyone then?

There just isn't a way the team can make the postseason next year. The team can't operate that way, but that's the reality for whoever decides to come here. Anyone who gets hired in the back of their mind has to think the Jets are gonna punt next year to make a bigger step forward in 2014-2015.
