IMMIGRANT TETHERS
Gabrielle Union has said countless amounts of times that she will never play a mammy/maid/stereotypical role. She has turned down a bunch of major acting gigs because they wanted her to play one of those embarrassing roles.
okay well I'll replace her with more then. Nia Long(u kno she been feigning to hit mainstream now, she'll take any mammy/jig role), Joy Bryant and most of these up and coming black actresses.

and to keep even more real, denzel could have or should have won for his roles is Malcolm X, Antione Fisher, John Q, glory. Givin Denzel an oscar was a backhanded compliment and a fukkin joke

Like @*DalMem* or @Rekkapryde said the oscars like to give out make-up awards. Like Marisa Tomei in "My Cousin Vinny"...but then again, I don't even think that was a make-up award and it still makes me scratch my head years later.

The Oscars doesn't like pro-black cinema IMO. I mean how else does someone like Spike Lee get shut out for so long? And how does a film like The Color Purple (which was produced by Steven Spielberg) get nominated for 12 awards and win ZERO??

That's the only thing I can say.

I agree that some stories like 12 years need to be told for educational purposes & for an historical perspective. But hollywood as a way of marginalizing events & making them more fiction than non fiction. Like the butler, most of that movie was completely false & I didn't like the way lee daniels made the black panthers look & eugene allen's son was never a black panther.

It was nice to see lupita when an award but in the back of my mind I can't help but think is this some kind of backhanded compliment by white people. I didn't even like training day & I've only seen it once because I hated denzel's role, halle berry made way better movies that monster's ball but all people talked about was how she got dug out by billy bob.

It seems you have some blacks that say be happy for their success, we're making strides. But you have others like myself that say the days of us tap dancing & playing these type of roles to get critically acclaimed should be at a minimum.

That's why I SMH @ tyler perry because to him the only objective is getting paid, he doesn't care that when he introduces characters like mr. brown that whites are laughing with us but at us or when he continues to dress in drag & act ignorant that everyone of those movies are trashed in hollywood & he knows his only meal ticket is black women but they have to be tired of his act as well.

Have you guys seen the film? :what: I feel like a lot of the people in this thread has not seen the work.
Listen, this film is not to be compared with The Butler...12 Years is the most realest work on the subject we've ever seen, it did not hold white folks hand at all. It showed them at their truest self...the most evil thing that has touched this earth to date. Its so rough that I don't think I can watch it again. You feel the fear of the characters, the catch 22 of living in that time & then you can parallel it with things that go on today i.e. the two dialects Black folks have to have in this country...(one within themselves & then one with the white folks - how you can be so great that it brings negative attention that harms you, seeing slaves TRY to be invisible & understanding why they would do it.)

Man...I dunno what to say but yall wrong on this one brehs. :to: Thread is just foul all around. This isn't the film or the role to have this discussion on. The Butler...yea sure, but 12 Years? nah...I can't get with that.

He most definitely should of won for Malcolm X, the Academy picked the wrong year to give a makeup award .

As far as the other movies you mentioned tho... :ld:

John Q over Adrien Brody in The Pianist?

An Oscar for his role in Antwone Fisher :whoa:

and he did get an Oscar for Glory that was his first one.

Yeah they haven't given Spike Lee the recognition he deserves at all.

I wonder how many people on here would be pissed if The Color Purple won because it wasn't produced or directed by black people.

What ya'll should be offended by is that "12 Years" is a American slave movie, but neither Chiwetel/Lupita/or Steve Mcqueen are descendants of slaves. They're British/African or both.

Lol they couldn't find any AFRICAN-AMERICANS for the main roles or directors? And I'm African myself.

Of course they don't catch feelings, it's not their history or ancestors.

You fukking idiot.

I always thought Denzel role was showing cops in a negative light. More so then black people.
